Doctor sends Dem patients away because of Healthcare issue
Mount Dora doctor tells Obama supporters: Go elsewhere

By Stephen Hudak, Orlando Sentinel

7:51 PM EDT, April 1, 2010

MOUNT DORA — A doctor who considers the national health-care overhaul to be bad medicine for the country posted a sign on his office door telling patients who voted for President Barack Obama to seek care "elsewhere."

"I'm not turning anybody away — that would be unethical," Dr. Jack Cassell, 56, a Mount Dora urologist and a registered Republican opposed to the health plan, told the Orlando Sentinel on Thursday. "But if they read the sign and turn the other way, so be it."

The sign reads: "If you voted for Obama…seek urologic care elsewhere. Changes to your healthcare begin right now, not in four years."

Estella Chatman, 67, of Eustis, whose daughter snapped a photo of the typewritten sign, sent the picture to U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson, the Orlando Democrat who riled Republicans last year when he characterized the GOP's idea of health care as, "If you get sick America … Die quickly."

4. Unfortunately, it's becoming quite obvious that a lot of
doctors have taken that oath. I, for one, would be glad to see something like this on my doctor's door, just so I'd both know who he really was and so I'd have the pleasure of leaving and telling him exactly why and what I thought of it.

You'd think they'd be happy, since they're gonna be getting more money out of it.

35. My doctor was interviewed by the local paper.
Just before the health care bill passed the local fish wrapper interviewed my PCP of more than 25 years to get his opinion. He said that health care is a right - not a privelege. I've chosen well.

34. There are some strange bits in the bio for that book
"...Despite the many adverse factors that affected the author during his urologic surgery residency, he generally managed to keep a bright outlook via denial and emotional repression, much of which has not resurfaced as of this writing."

"...Initially lulled into a sense of well-being by Gainesville’s lack of nightly gunshot victims and snowstorms, “Jack” gleefully embraced the new position he had with Dr. Zev Wajsman, as this gifted professor’s sole protégé. What at first seemed to mark the end of Dr. Cassell’s training, ala “the Manchurian Candidate method” back in Jersey, was in retrospect, more like a warm up for things to come. As luck would have it, Dr. Wajsman was rumored to have been an Israeli drill sergeant before becoming a physician, and, therefore, more than capable in his ability to provide Dr. Cassell with a few “finishing touches,” during his last affiliation with the academic community."

"...It was also around that time that he and several others attempted over a several year period to create a medical insurance product in the state unlike any other before it. The goal was to form a physician and hospital owned HMO, in which the smallest possible profit would be realized, allowing for more money to go back for the provision of healthcare. The Physician Hospital Corporation, as it was called, was complete in the physician arm, with several counties of doctors united and ready to go with both moral and financial support. Had a strong hospital partner felt the same dedication, it is Dr. Cassell’s feeling that no other HMO would have possibly been able to compete with the healthcare products it offered. After all, traditional HMOs have to turn a profit for their investors!"

He comes off as an oddball - I am not sure I would want to get treated by him even without the political crap he is stirring up. I get the impression of a spoiled brat who throws a tantrum when he doesn't get his way.

Wow. So he's not actually screening patients, he's not turning anyone away who comes through the door... so he's not REALLY violating his oath to treat patients. But sick people who aren't already his patients... that's another story. What a weasel. To let his personal and/or political beliefs in ANY WAY interfere with his role as a doctor... that's just wrong. It says, "If you don't agree with my politics, I don't care about your health."

36. One question springs immediately to mind...
What percentage of a Florida urologist's practice is vasectomy care? Now it seems to me that if ALL the men seeking vasectomies in Florida were Democrats, at least for the 20-30 minutes it takes to get your balls disconnected, and if they all decided to seek out a Democratic surgeon to do them, our friend here might decide that sign wasn't such a good idea after all.

If scores of people who support health care reform were to schedule new appointments with this guy for months and never show up. That would be a really bad thing to do, and would cost him a lot of money, so don't do it.

44. Sick individual
This is clearly a case of the worst of a demographic getting the most attention. Why is it that we give these people the ego rub that they seem to need? I'll bet that there are dozens of doctors in this guy's county that are disgusted by this, but we never see the average doc working their day helping people profiled on any message board or MSM outlet. My thought is to stop giving this guy and his brethren any attention at all. They don't deserve it. This is the textbook example of a person that is intelligent enough in their field, but has no idea how the rest of the world works. We can say all of the bad things about this guy we want, but in the end we should be spending as much time looking for the people that are doing the opposite. Those people that are actively helping their community. I'd like to see some threads that champion those people. Didn't we used to call those people out heroes? I'll bet most people can name more D-list celebrities than local people that have actually helped out in a meaningful way. That is the "done as a society" proof we all see each day.

46. Some Very Interesting Background On This Idiot...
(A repeat of my post in the Comments Section of the Article)

This guy's a real winner. First, he practices the most severe form of intimidation in a medical environment evidencing a deplorable, reprehensible, and entirely unethical medical standard.

But the real kicker is that, if we didn't understand it already from such behavior, he's unequivocally third rate: 1. after graduating from Rutgers in 1976, he could not even get into a United States Medical School. So, he deferred for two years and finally settled at St. George's University School of Medicine in GRENADA! - where it appears it took him FIVE years to graduate. 2. after that, it was one lackluster appointment after the other.

Anyone reading his own writings finds nothing but a bitter, bitter and sorry old man. Just what you want in a compassionate Physician, huh?

Heal thyself first, idiot, then work on the healthcare system. Intellectually, "Doctor," you can't hold a stethoscope to President Obama.

Just perhaps this is all part of a marketing and publicity campaign to garner attention for the wife's political objectives?

(not) all the pharmacists who refused to fill women's scripts for birth control pills, the morning after pill, etc. on the basis of their own morality?

They didn't face any consequences, and most are still practicing today. I agree, they should not be...but most are. I also agree that the AMA should step in and their licenses should be challenged, if they can't do their jobs.

The sad thing is gw tried to protect all the tools with this mentality w/his bs bill (prior to his leaving office). I don't recall the name of the bill, but it attempted to protect a medical professional's right to refuse procedures (or any specific sort of practice) for "moral reasons." :eyes:

This crap's been going on for 8 years. I'd hoped w/gw leaving office we'd seen the last of it, but apparently health care reform is bringing out more of this type of behaviour. Previously most of the occurences happened to women, so a lot of people didn't (seem) to take note of it. (sigh)

68. But . . . what do you do when you have a great pediatrician, who say's,
"He's a socialist, a socialist", loudly to his office staff, before they call you in?

You overlook his politics and bring in the kids and stay friendly. He's been our pediatrician for a dozen years, and he's the best. I have seen others, and they don't compare. People I work with have overlooked my politics at work, at a defense contractor, no less. That's how it should be. Performance, and only job performance, is what should matter.

69. This is great....
they should make a law, that would make all republican doctors post a sign letting everyone know that they don't care about people and only your money...

74. Another doctor who got into medicine....
...for dubious reasons. Newsflash, if you hummed a tune in your head while taking your oath (to do no harm to patients) you have no business in the industry. Do the world a favor, close your practice, and dig ditches instead.
