for giving the middle class some help.

Our over all wages were down over $9,000 from last year ... we lost a dependent and we received well over a thousand more with our refund than last year.

How have you done? Better... worse?

:toast: to the Democratic party for following thru and helping the middle class!

1. I've seen these posts a half dozen times, and they irritate the crap out of me.
I think I need to hire a new tax guy. My return was about half its usual size this last year, while everyone else is crowing about larger than normal returns. WTF?!?! :wtf:

2. Well... I know I didn't change anything from the previous year as far as
how many I claimed. My daughter graduated college and got married so we lost a deduction there and I thought we would do worse.

My wife and I have used "TaxAct" for several years now and can compare each years return. This was by far our best year as far as the size of our refund.

4. WTF! Indeed
This is the first year I have had to pay. I usually only get a hundred or so back, but I have to pay that amount this year. What the hell are our tax guys missing?

12. Did your income change?
Even if someone else does your return put your 1040 from 2009 next to 1040 from 2008.

Should be pretty easy to spot where the changes are by comparing the major lines against each other.

17. Maybe less was withheld? What was your TOTAL tax as
compared with last year's? Getting money back only means too much was withheld. It's the TOTAL tax you pay that matters.

5. You're right
You need to hire a new tax guy.

Our federal return was much larger. Our state return tho.....much smaller. We're in CA. I do believe that state taxes have gone up in many states. Perhaps this is the reason for your increase?

10. Thanks
will check with ol lady about the state thing, she is the one who checks all that out.

I have 2 state returns I have to do and I have always used my fed to cover them. Almost always a wash really, except this year.

Thanks to all for the input.

6. What's changed for you from last year?
Income up, lose a dependant, no IRA contribution?

8. Go to someone else and file an amended return
We did that last year. It didn't help for state, but did help for fed. Your probably missing a bunch of deductions your not aware of.

20. That would be me, too
Got about $2500 last year. This year? $67. Nothing changed, in fact, we made a little less than last year (husband worked less overtime).

3. I don't have to pay anything - and get everything we paid back!
Usually we make quarterly estimates and have to pay a little in April. This year we get everything back and don't have to make any payments this year unless we have a windfall.

18. "Return" is the name of the form ."Refund" is what you get back
when too much is withheld.

15. The same thing happened for us.. Surprised the hell out of me
I think that they withheld more from my husband's bonus this year, but I was very pleasantly surprised. I actually was afraid we might have to pay, but I check & re-checked the numbers ;;,,no complaints here :)

I had did some umpiring last summer and usually I don't make enough to require the city have to send in my wages to the Tax Commission. I didn't pay on any money I earned... so I knew I had to declare it... I ended up having to pay $400.00 for those wages ..but we still did very well....
