Catholic Church should establish an order for priests who want to marry
From the report:

"In the short term, the Church needs to do all it can to punish the pedophilic priests in Europe and elsewhere, while continuing to acknowledge its mistakes, express apologies and provide fair compensation for all who have been hurt through official negligence, be it at the papal level or below.

But it the long term, the solution is much more joyous than making up for past sins. An order for priests who can marry and have children would breathe much-needed new life into the Roman Catholic Church, ultimately leading to more blessings and fewer scandals. That's something people of all faiths, not just Catholics, will welcome with an open heart."

The Heartthrob from the Vatican

By Jeff Israely/Rome

When Pope Benedict XVI touches down for his first papal visit in the United States next week, you may notice that he doesn't have the same onstage flair as his predecessor, John Paul II. But you may also begin to notice a very handsome man of the cloth never far from the pontiff's side. That would be Monsignor Georg Gänswein, the Pope's personal secretary, responsible for everything from deciding who gets to see Benedict, to keeping His Holiness on schedule, to discreetly handing him his papal reading glasses just before a homily or other public discourse. While he is the paradigm of discretion, others have taken liberties with his image. Fashion designer Donatella Versace said her Spring 2007 collection was inspired by Gänswein, confessing: "I was thinking of an austere, severe and ethical man. I find Father Georg's austerity very elegant."

Italians have taken notice of Gänswein, and nicknamed him "Bel Giorgio," which Americans might translate as: Gorgeous George. Paparazzi have snapped photos of him playing tennis in his tennis whites, while the Roman and Bavarian press eagerly report his bravura on the ski slopes and appearances at evening Church functions. Nevertheless, despite the glamour imposed on him by the celebrity press, the tall, athletic and dirty-blond Monsignor in his clerical black, concentrates on his pivotal but quiet job choreographing papal appearances. And that is how Americans will see him, in a supporting role buoyed by his scene-stealing good looks. ....

Pope Benedict Issues Formal Vatican Decree: A Smile Is Not a Sin

November 18, 2006

POPE BENEDICT AND MSGR. GANSWEIN, THE POPE’S DEVOTED PERSONAL SECRETARY

The New York Times published an article today that disclosed some of the jokes making their rounds about Pope Benedict and his secretary, Msgr. Georg Ganswein. This brief extract from the Times article describes some of those satirical moments:

Perhaps it is his good looks, or his work in the ever-so-serious Vatican, but for whatever reason, Msgr. Georg Gänswein, Pope Benedict XVI’s secretary, has suddenly found himself the butt of jokes in the Italian news media. ....

In a curious “non-response” to this growing wave of satire, the pope’s secretary told his radio audience that “the Vatican was not offended.” “We’re convinced that smiles bring religion closer to the people,” he said, “because a smile is never a sin.”

Pope is Wrong: This One’s Very Sinful.

In response to the Times article, Andrew Sullivan published this irreverent, biting criticism of the article (and the Pope) today on his Time Magazine blog, The Daily Dish:

“The NYT runs a very curious article today about Italian humor about the current Pope. None of the jokes cited seem to me to be very risque or even funny. The entire argument of the piece is undermined by lack of any real evidence that this pope is subject to any more ridicule than has historically been the case. Except of course for that photograph (see above, seated with Msgr. Georg Ganswein). It shows the actual source of the jokes circulating in the Vatican and elsewhere about this Prada-preferring, Gucci-wearing, high-drama German intellectual (Pope). The actual jokes – which the NYT won’t print – are about how good looking so many of the men are who surround Benedict, especially his personal assistant, Msgr. Georg Gänswein, shown holding the large phallic microphone in front of Benedict’s face. The Vatican gossip merchants call Georg 'Gay-Org.' He is inseparable from Benedict. And he surely is easy on the eyes. There is no evidence that Benedict has ever broken his vows of chastity; but there is no evidence that he is heterosexual either. Hence the gossip; hence the jokes. When you’re a Pope who declares that even closeted, chaste gay men cannot be priests, it’s pushing your luck to clothe yourself in Prada, bedeck your Pope-mobile with luxurious Natuzzi Italian white leather, and surround yourself with assistants who look like they strayed from the pages of 'L’Uomo Vogue.'

"Butch it up, sister. Or the jokes will only get louder.”

At least as far as the females of the church were concerned. :)

5. The Church had married priests for the first few hundred years.
Edited on Wed Mar-31-10 09:41 PM by onehandle
As far as I am concerned, this would just be returning to the roots of the church. I see no controversy.

My controversial suggestion would be the addition of female priests.

6. The Vatican already has - it's called the Greek Catholic Church
A few Eastern Orthodox churches have reconciled themselves with the Vatican and accepted the Pope as their spiritual leader, including the Greek Catholic and Maronite churches.

Priests from these churches may not have the same level of recognition as Roman Catholic priests, but last I heard, they can get married and enjoy official recognition from Rome.

16. I think the point is that allowing married men to serve as Priests
will attract men to the priesthood that otherwise wouldn't consider it because of that whole celebacy thing.

17. Sure -- I just chafe when I hear it in conjunction with discussions about the sex abuse scandal.
Like it's a solution. Yes, there's a shortage of priests. Yes, there are men who consider it but don't do it because of the celibacy requirement. Both are good reasons for dropping the celibacy requirement.

However, there is corruption from the top down and a realization that the admission of fallibility from the top down can be a life-changer for the church. The sex-abuse scandal, to me, is not a good argument for dropping the celibacy requirement.

YMMV, of course.

I would be satisfied with that.

But yes, I agree. "Celibate" authority figures without a SHRED of accountability are the root cause here.

18. People like this are so funny
They actually believe that their voices have any influence whatsoever in the Catholic Church. The Church "should" do this or "needs" to do that...empty and pointless words. The Church will continue to do exactly as they please, and pay no mind at all to the rank and file.

20. ...and END the sick male fetish that women are not qualified to be priests, cuz
you know why. No dick. The male self-worship of the Catholic hierarchy is among the gravest sins that the Catholic Church has ever committed, and may be THE gravest. It led to all the other sins--including persecution of other Christians for their beliefs, the arrogance of presuming to speak for God, the legalistic obsession with "doctrine" and "obedience," the absurd monolithic organization, the fetishism of monarchy, the fetishism of the Mass with its lace-trimmed royal robes and voodooistic rituals, "holy wars," baptism by the sword, the obsession with MALE succession of the Popes back to St. Peter--no women involved, the exclusion of the Mother Goddess from the "Holy Trinity," witch-burnings and non-stop insults to women. For instance, until recently--and it may still be true in some Catholic Churches--women who have given birth are considered "unclean" and must undergo "Purification" before they can receive communion, and another for instance, women banned from the altar because they are somehow less worthy than men and their presence in the "sanctum of sanctums" could not be tolerated by self-inflated egomaniac male priests, and another for instance, requiring women to wear veils in church--a rule dating from the 5th Century AD and the first bishop to call himself "patriarch"--"Saint" Cyril of Alexandria, the murderer of the female philosopher and mathematician Hypatia.

Jesus said "Love thy neighbor." He did NOT say "except for women." He surrounded himself with women. And even the expurgated, Bowdlerized, messed with "synoptic" ("official") gospels have traces of their very great importance to the founder of Christianity. He preached a radical doctrine of EQUALITY and that is what the earliest Christians practiced. (See Elaine Pagels' "The Gnostic Gospels.") Not until the Roman Empire disintegrated--no small thanks to "Saint" Cyril and his ilk--did the "patriarchs" of the 5th and 6th Centuries ally the Christian religion with the state--with the monarchy--and its bludgeon power, and become obsessed with their pricks as providing them with some special magic from God. Jesus CLEARLY did not preach this. All he ever said--over and over and over again, in every way possible--is, "Love they neighbor." How this got transformed into velvet robes and jeweled crowns and vast estates and dictatorial power is a sorry tale, indeed, and it is time that the Catholic Church recognized this series of catastrophic errors and violations of Jesus' teachings, first among them that women are unholy, unworthy, dirty and may or may not have souls!

22. Actually... it is all about money
My understanding is that priests (in the olden days), ended up being the most powerful and wealthy people in a community, and the Church did not want that wealth to pass on to progeny. They wanted it to go to the Church.

And thus, they banned sexual intercourse with their wives in the first quarter of the 4th century:

Which is unnatural. What we see today is a result of that. God (if you believe in her), gave us sexuality. It is the natural order of things. To force people away from it, causes shame (for natural feelings they have been told they should not have), which leads to depravity, and worse.

All for the love of money.

Love of Money is the Source of All Evil.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synod_of_Elvira

The earliest known is that of the Council of Elvira (c. 306):

Bishops, presbyters, deacons, and others with a position in the ministry are to abstain completely from sexual intercourse with their wives and from the procreation of children. If anyone disobeys, he shall be removed from the clerical office.

I also think the Church should allow women to serve as priests. And bring back those guitar masses with songs like "Kumbaya" and "Take Our Bread" and "The King of Glory." And potlucks. More potlucks, while we're at it.

Just think how things might have been different if Pope John Paul's papacy had lasted longer than 33 days. :-(

28. Ha! The King of Glory.
The King of Glory comes
The Nation rejoices
Open the gates before him
Lift up your voices

Who is the King of Glory
How shall we call him?
He is Emmanuel
The promised of Ages.

That brings back memories . . . I used to play guitar in church.

The priesthood is not sexual identity therapy, it is a vocation. Make it a desirable one for sexually well-adjusted people.
