Winner of the "Get off my lawn" award: Man hates on musical ice cream trucks
A Redding man's complaints about ice cream trucks in his neighborhood have prompted the city to review antiquated portions of its Public Peace, Morals and Welfare ordinance.

Trucks selling frozen treats for Jiffy's Ice Cream broadcast electronic music box versions of "The Entertainer" and other tunes from mounted speakers. These ice cream vendors are the only sound trucks currently operating in the city.

Redding officials may sharpen sound truck noise thresholds but loosen restrictions that prevent ice cream vendors from running on Sundays, holidays and after 7 p.m., said Pamela Mize, deputy city clerk.

Mize described the proposed changes as a work in progress, adding that she doesn't know when the City Council will consider any revisions.

I, for one, am happy to live in a neighborhood that is ice-cream truck friendly. I feel happy every time I hear them. :)

2. In my old neighborhood there was one ice cream truck that was insanely loud.

There was more then one ice cream vendor making the rounds daily. The majority were reasonable - just this one guy was disruptive. It is possible for it to be so loud as to be abusive - you'll know it when you hear it.

3. NYC bans musical ice cream trucks
They've been banned for a few years now.
I wonder if it has anything to do with our lack of lawns.....

10. Not where I live, unfortunately.
Is it only in Manhattan? Or maybe nobody bothers to enforce it in my neighborhood. Sometimes these trucks will park on the corner and blast out-of-tune versions of "Pop goes the Weasel" or "It's a Small World" for hours on end. Or else they just circle around the same couple blocks all day, so you hear them pass by every 5 minutes. When the weather gets really hot, they will even keep going until one or two in the morning on the weekends, for the late night party crowd. These things are really freaking loud, too. I live on the sixth floor, facing away from the street, and the sound level is still obnoxious.

I feel this guy's pain. :banghead:

12. I feel for you
I googled and found that the NYC ordinance prohibits ice cream trucks from playing the music, I mean noise, when standing. So some trucks get around the ordinance by driving around playing the noise.
Here's an article I found, http://www.nypost.com/p/news/regional/brooklyn/item_k38pOf4buH3SIqYj6b0iPJ

4. I hated the damned things when I worked nights
but I remember how happy I was when I was a kid and they'd come around, so I kept my big mouth shut.

The exception was an ice cream truck that used to park just below my window in Boston every night, playing the same crappy jingle over and over, dusk until dawn.

I raised hell, found out they were selling something besides ice cream out of that truck and the cops were paid to look the other way.

I said I'd look the other way, too, if they turned that damn jingle off.

They moved.

5. did you know that the CIA and Mossad beam microwave mind control radiation...
...through those speakers? Fact. The guy who's suing his neighbor for using electronics (cell phone, laptop, etc) told me all about it. Why do you think kids all gather obediently when the truck pulls into the neighborhood? Just like little zombie lemmings.

Be VERY afraid. Never go out without sufficient tinfoil wrapped around your head!

8. The other day, I would have been totally on his side.
Damn loud ass truck came down my street, no problem. The problem was the SAME short ditty cranked THAT loud for literally a half an hour while 6 (yes, only 6) children got ice cream. The damn thing needs an auto-shutoff after say, 5 minutes if it's stopped.

9. Is there a law that says ice cream trucks (with their interiors of dubious cleanliness)
have to sell ice cream while playing obnoxious music over and over again?

They manage to sell ice cream from the trucks without music in NYC.

11. I have images of our ice cream truck driver
going home after a day of playing the theme song to "The Sting" at 110 decibels, popping open a beer, and playing the same thing on the CD player at full blast.
