Apple boycotts FOX News because of Glen Beck
Apple boycotts Fox News because of Glenn Beck
by Michael Grothaus (RSS feed) on Mar 29th 2010 at 1:00PM
A two-week old report by the Washington Post is only now gaining traction in the tech section. It appears that Apple has boycotted Fox News based on Glenn Beck and his ludicrous statements, including calling President Obama a racist and branding progressivism a "cancer."

"More than 200 companies have joined a boycott of Beck's program, making it difficult for Fox to sell ads," the Washington Post reports. "The time has instead been sold to smaller firms offering such products as Kaopectate, Carbonite, 1-800-PetMeds and Goldline International. A handful of advertisers, such as Apple, have abandoned Fox altogether. Network executives say they believe they could charge higher rates if the host were more widely acceptable to advertisers."

Given that Fox has the largest cable news viewership in the US, Apple's decision to boycott them was no small decision, especially with the impending launch of the iPad. Then again, Apple doesn't have a problem garnering media attention; it'll probably still penetrate a majority of the mindshare market without running a single iPad ad.

Scary thing is FOX is not letting this get in Becks way. They are choosing CONTENT over MONEY and when a Republican drops MONEY as their number one value, man it's bad.

57. I may hate the apple religion, but macs do take abuse well
I have an ipod touch, and aside from the bluetooth being wonky on me (i need to go into the local apple sore, and hope they'll accept my American receipt for warranty) it's a decent lil unit.

I have forced myself to become familiar with the mac so that I could add a 3rd "language" to my IT resume.

I'm glad Apple did this.

However... the brutal reality is that these knuckle draggers probably aren't in jobs' target demographic anyway.

I know even an idiot can use a mac (after all there's only one button, and they press it for you) but the apple market is generally educated professionals who don't want to be bothered with knowing how a computer works (or old people).

That's a great market, but these idiots are even lower knowledge level than that!

While I think it's a good thing to have a major corporation pull out, I think its just because apple got as much as they're going to get from fox, that's all.

37. The scary thing is...
every advertiser in the world could cancel their ads on Fox, and Fox would simply go to an HBO-like "subscription" model and keep right on going. But then they'd REALLY ramp up the hate...without the need to worry about advertisers, Beck's Nazi-ass tendencies would be fully exposed--and the teabaggers would LOVE it!

69. They'd keep the ones they really want, though
Fox News is definitely a targeted network. It is a channel by Republicans for Republicans. The last Democrat they had on there was Alan Colmes, and he was there to be a punching bag. Do you think they'd ever run a show entitled "Hannity and Olbermann," "Hannity and Maddow" or "Hannity and Rhodes"? I would LOVE to see "Limbaugh and Maddow" because at the end of the second week the show was on Rush would have eleven assholes.

With no advertisers and no liberals in the audience, they could give the Imperial Wizard of the KKK his own show and people would watch it.

96. There's no reason why that couldn't happen
It would probably be better for them...they could password-protect the site and investigate anyone who wanted to buy a subscription. If they went to an HBO-like model there'd be WAY too many Democrats who'd set up "Fix News Watch" sites--not that we aren't doing that now, of course.

93. If Fox goes to subscription, they will lose most of their viewers.
People watch Fox because it puts on a fancy show for free. Many of their viewers are on very limited incomes and would not be able to afford Fox if they had to pay.

That is why Rupert Murdoch bought the high-end stuff like the Wall Street Journal that attract wealthy consumers. The Wall Street crowd will pay what is asked for the Journal -- and their purchase of the journal can be used to keep Glenn Beck's stuff on the air.

The Wall Street Journal is for the modern equivalent of the Roman senators, and Fox is the arena where the people are kept entertained and aroused. Fox and the Wall Street Journal feed each other.

Kaopectate stops the "drizzlin' shits". Ex-Lax starts it.

Actually, I think it's very subtle of them - advertising yet undermining the very core and substance of Faux News' existence!

I just don't think that there's enough Kaopectate in the world to stop the average daily flow from Beck, though.

This is propaganda that has already paid for by the rethuglicans and their cronies. Any advertising revenue would be a nice extra bone, but if their aim was profits, Beck would have already been canceled due to the fact that many of his advertisers have bailed out because of his insane ranting.

Faux Snooze is a dangerous terrorist organization. I think they should be shut down, and some arrests should be made. They go far beyond what is legitimate "free speech". They are openly threatening our elected officials as well as their supporters. There is no nuance or gray area with these threats. They are obvious threats, along with incitement of others to commit violence against Democratic Legislators and Democratic voters. These mutherfuckers are genuine terrorists, and they should be treated accordingly. :wtf:

The local advertisers will take the slots via their cable operators. The mom and pop stores are being used.

49. I'm a Canadian. I'm not fucking impressed with Apple.
Got an iPod Touch for my birthday and I now learned that I need to get a new credit card to get any apps because Apple won't allow Canadians to use iTunes gift cards to buy Apps. They claimed it was because of government regulations, but the minister responsible said that there is nothing stopping Apple from allowing Canadians to buy Apps with their gift cards. If it weren't for those stupid apps, I'd be able to get by just fine without a credit card.

I've never had a problem with my iPhone from Rogers, but I've got my credit card linked to my iTunes account.

There's lots of discussion about this issue on Canadian Apple forums and blogs. Hope Apple gets their head out of their ass on this issue soon.

55. Here's the thing,though..
Fox does not NEED advertisers all that much.. Look at the washington times.. They have been in the red FOREVER..

Fox is the propaganda arm of the RNC.. even with few ads, FOX will be on the air..

Guys like Glen Beck attract viewers..ads or no ads.

Half his viewers watch to scream, at the tv in disgust and the other half watch, all dewy-eyed in awe of his wonderfulness.. Either way, Fox "wins"..

110. So true...
What most people probably fail to miss is that Fox is owned by... well, Fox. As in 20th Century. I'll never forget Jon Stewart once asking someone if he was talking about "good Fox or bad Fox."

Hell, 20 years of "The Simpsons" has more than paid for Fox News. They can bleed all the red ink they want with a portfolio like that.

58. Fox News is feeding the violence. My YMCA has three exercise rooms. Fox used to be
on at least one TV in every room. I've noticed recently that it appears to be gone. I wrote a thank-you note, stating at the end I hoped it was a permanent change.

do or not..as long as they get the party line out there...

I applaud all those that are boycotting FAUX, but I am not sure it will have any influence on the powers at the top of FAUX

I guess at this point it is good public relations for companies to disassociate themselves from FAUX NOISE since they were so obviously merely a communications arm of the repukes.

105. Interesting point....
I believe Clear Channel Com has a history of buying up radio stations -- some quite popular in the Arbitrons -- and installing the RW echo chamber, causing a sharp drop in listenership. In one medium-size Florida market, they bought a station which was No. 1 out of 28 surveyed, and drove it down to the bottom with Lush Rambaugh, et al, junk. They didn't seem to mind. Just goes to show that "following the money trail" is nothing but secular Bible-quoting by the crassest believers in economic-determinism.

91. Anyone remember Limbaugh's TV sponsors?
I remember the main advertisers for Limbaugh's short-lived television show were Chia-Pets, get rich quick schemes and psychic hotlines. Advertisers don't waste their money. They knew what kind of people watched Limbaugh's show. And anyone remember how all the people in Limbaugh's audience wore suits? It looked silly. I guess they required everyone in their audience to wear suits to try to give credibility to the show. It didn't and the Limbaugh television show soon went extinct. I wish his radio show suffered the same fate...

99. Makes me almost want to buy an Apple product
but alas, others have best cost/benefit.

Their portable computers are ludicrously expensive, like Sony's. I very much prefer to buy a less high-fallutin' brand like Acer or Asus for a third of the price. And then I install Linux on them and have the same zero-virus benefit.

If new MacBooks become cheaper, though, I'll seriously consider them as an option.

108. I wonder if they will not use Apple laptops on "24" now
I sporadically watched that show in the beginning, but after Abu Graib etc..when it was clear that show was sanctifying and glorifying torture as something that WORKED, I never watched again, but flipping through I noticed that they always use Apple laptops.

The same goes for a lot of the top shows. I wonder if FOX will now decree the elimination of them, or is that up to the producers of the show? Obviously Hollywood loves Apple products to go out of their way to promote them by using them on set.
