Move over Jesus. Make room for Ratzinger on that cross!
Archbishop Timothy Dolan strongly defended Pope Benedict against charges the pontiff helped cover up cases of child abuse, winning a standing ovation from parishioners at Palm Sunday Mass.

Sunday the archbishop urged the faithful at St. Patrick's Cathedral to pray for the pontiff, saying he suffered some of the same unjust persecution Jesus once faced.

The standing-room-only crowd applauded Dolan for calling the Holy Father a "leader in purification, reform and renewal that the church so very much needs."

Dolan also credited the Pope for making progress on protecting kids from predator priests.

" could never have happened without the insistence and support of the very man now being daily crowned with thorns by groundless innuendo," Dolan said.

5. Has he ever recanted the loyalty oath to Adolph Hitler...
...he must have taken in the 1940s? A lot of folks say that doesn't count as legitimate criticism because he was just a teenager then. Still, that excuse would be easier to accept if he actually recanted that oath. Maybe he did, but I've never heard of it.

8. Thank you, Archbishop Dolan!
Because as we all know, when a man rapes a child, the real victim in all this is the guy with the boner and those who cover up for him. That's so eerily like Jesus, the comparison could almost go without saying. Almost. But you said it, didn't you? And God bless those parishioners, standing and cheering the Archbishop at St. Patrick's. Just like the crowd at the first Palm Sunday. Or the one on Maundy Thursday. So difficult to tell the crowds apart, sometimes.

Now HE'S a victim??????? I've got to go to a family Easter where they keep his picture on the mantel. It will be all I can to not to spit on it, as well as not to question the basic humanity of people who are still in support of this vile institution. Family members or not.

11. "The abuse witchhunts are about the same as McCarthy's red scares of the 50s."
They'd be the same if there really were communists in the State Dept. Institutional child rape by the R.C. church is real. And there is no reason to think it has only started 50 years ago or whatever.

17. What investigation? The church never reported the incident to the police.
That is the point. The church has been accused of covering up hundreds (maybe thousands) if incidents of abuse. They never reported any of them to authorities. Molestation and abuse is rampant and institutionalize in the Catholic church. It is as much part of their history and culture as penance and donations.

44. WTF?
your attitude and the attitude of the Church is disgusting. When the Church found out about this, and continued to let these PEDOPHILES work around children, they became complicit in the crime. Worse than complicit they became conspirators and are as guilty as the offenders. The "Pope" and his funny hat may want to avoid coming to America.

If so, I'll be glad to know it. If not, I have to assume he still considers himself bound by it. Any word when Hitler and the rest of the Nazi Catholics will be excommunicated and sent to hell?

The Daily News is a republican rag. They love the church so it's actually incredible that even they are so disgusted with these child abusers.

36. First appeared in NYT

http://www.nytimes.com/info/pope-benedict-xvi/

And the point holds---Orwellian point, really:

journalists aren't cops. The paper isn't a court (though taken as such). Merely hearsay, and cases from 20 years ago.

For that matter, the dioceses, not the church itself handle the matters. But....why not blame the parents? they chose not to take it to cops.

22. For someone "forced" to be a Nazi he sure does love him some Holocaust deniers!
JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Jewish officials in Israel and abroad are outraged that Pope Benedict XVI has decided to lift the excommunication of a British bishop who denies that Jews were killed in Nazi gas chambers.

The decision by Pope Benedict XVI to welcome back the bishop has infuriated Jewish officials.

The pope's decree, issued Saturday, brings back into the Catholic Church's fold Bishop Richard Williamson and three other bishops who belong to the Society of Saint Pius X.

The liaison for Vatican-Jewish relations -- Cardinal Walter Kasper, head of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity -- said he was not consulted.

"It was a pope decision" he told CNN in a phone interview. "I have my opinions about it, but I do not wish to comment on a decision made by the pope."

The Society of Saint Pius X was founded by Archbishop Lefebrve, who rebelled against the Vatican's modernizing reforms in the 1960s, and who consecrated the men in unsanctioned ceremonies. As a result, Pope John Paul II excommunicated the four in 1988.

Within the Catholic Church, many Vatican analysts suggests that in an attempt to heal one rift with ultra-conservative church members, the pope is risking creating a wider gap with those more liberal groups that have fully embraced the changes and reforms.

The church's decision to lift the excommunication comes a few days after a Swedish television aired an interview with Williamson in which the 68-year-old claimed the Nazis did not use gas chambers.

"I believe that the historical evidence is strongly against -- is hugely against -- 6 million Jews having been deliberately gassed in gas chambers as a deliberate policy of Adolf Hitler," he said in the interview, which appeared on various Web sites since its broadcast. What do you think?

"I believe there were no gas chambers," he added.

He added: "I think that 200,000 to 300,000 Jews perished in Nazi concentration camps, but none of them by gas chambers."

Prosecutors in Regensburg, Germany, where the interview took place -- and where the pope once taught -- are investigating Williamson's comments on suspicion of inciting racial hatred. Holocaust denial is treated as a crime in Germany.

Bishop Bernard Fellay, who now heads the society, distanced himself from Williamson's position. He told the Italian newspaper La Stampa that Williamson was responsible for his own opinions.

Rabbi David Rosen of the American Jewish Committee called the move by the Roman Catholic Church "shameful."

By "welcoming an open holocaust denier into the Catholic Church without any recantation on his part, the Vatican has made a mockery of John Paul II's moving and impressive repudiation and condemnation of anti-Semitism," he said.

37. They denied protection under the law to many thousands of children.
And the last I checked they believe they are above the law. They took away our ability to take them to court by hidind their criminals. I am fine with dragging them in under arrest and putting them in prison to await trial and then letting all of those abused people accuse them of their crimes in public. Let's do it! A systematic cartel of child abuse doesn't need bail. Just keep them under lock and key till the verdict is in.
