Let us not forget the Homeland Security Report Warned of 'Rising Right-Wing Extremism'
Edited on Mon Mar-29-10 12:34 AM by Tx4obama
and last year when the report (which btw was ordered by Bush) came out the GOP hollered and whined until the report was buried.

Article and copy of the ten page report can be found here:

2. Your link is broken in some way
This ought to work http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/04/14/homeland-security-report_n_186834.html

I'm not sure why you say the report was 'buried', I thought it got plenty of news coverage considering how little detailed information was in it (in fact I found it disappointingly superficial, but then it was commissioned by the bush admin so perhaps I shouldn't be surprised...). It generated about 1000 news articles, according to Google.

4. I fixed the link the OP :)
I said 'buried' because after all the fuss the GOP made over it, all the details never came to light in the MSM. And after all the hubbub no one has mentioned it since on the 'television machine', therefore it became dead and buried.

9. What details, though?
There really isn't a whole lot of content there. Vets with military skills are attractive recruiting targets, RWers are cummed about the perception that globalization has lowered US standing in the world, have a bee in their bonnet about illegal immigrants, and include a higher proportion of vets than the general population. I mean, the whole thing was only 9 pages long with a lot of white space.

I honestly don't think it contained a great deal of information worth reporting - no statistics, case studies, legal analyses or historical insights. Actually, when I read it (and I just read it again to refresh my memory) my first response was 'I wonder how much we paid for this?' It seemed like something any well-informed person could have written in a single afternoon.

8. Welcome to DU!
Sorry about your experience. Getting a handle on RW terrorism is going to be problematic, as they have many sympathizers in the community. Does anyone really believe that abortion-clinic bomber Eric Rudolph managed to subsist in the wilderness while a fugitive for five long years, 'camping in the woods, gathering acorns and salamanders, pilfering vegetable gardens, stealing grain from a grain silo, and raiding dumpsters in a nearby town' without assistance from anyone else? He also managed to cache 250 lb of dynamite in the North Carolina woods before getting captured.

12. We stripped our Obama/Biden stickers off
because we have a 12 yr daughter and we don't want our support for Obama/Biden to hurt her, especially when we live in the eye of the storm.

7. Janet Napolitano actually apologized for that report
http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/04/16/napolitano.apology/

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano apologized Thursday after some veterans groups were offended by a department report about right-wing extremism.

The report said extremist groups may try to attract veterans returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It also said extremists also may use the recession and the election of the nation's first African-American president to recruit members. . . .

Napolitano apologized on CNN on Thursday morning. "I know that some veterans groups were offended by the fact that veterans were mentioned in this assessment, so I apologize for that offense. It was certainly not intended," she told CNN's "American Morning."

She said the report was an assessment -- not an accusation -- and said she would meet with leaders of veterans groups next week.

10. Our family has served
Our neighbor just assumes we are s p i c s....My brother is a Vietnam war vet, (Marine). My nephew (Army), served during the first Iraq war, never went to Iraq. My 23 yr old son who recently lost his job, is joining the Air force and our sadness is not being able to let our neighbor know this, because he just assumes we are illegals, because we speak two languages and our color. How do we approach the anger?

My father got here during the Trujillo era in 1957. My mom in 1961.

How else do we prove our loyalty to our country?

Thank you for your support.

15. Largely irrelevant to the point here, but I'm getting damn sick and tired of...
all these apologies to pissed off groups that have to find offense any time they're mentioned. There's been Nazis and skinheads IN the military without these "veterans groups" being offended at that.

The "offense" is often enough manufactured to make a political statement.

13. We aren't cowards
My dad fought against Trujillo's Right wing oppression. We were all raised to love the USA, but we have a 12 yr old and peace is all we want for her.

Our 23 yr old son knocked on over 1000 doors, our 20 yr old daughter went to West Virginia and had an extraordinary Iraqi veteran give her hope, yet soon ...after his neighbor sicked their dogs on her....she also never gave up for Obama/Biden.

I called hundreds of LEGAL Latinos, to encourage them to vote.

My partner who speaks better Spanish did the same.

And we won't give up

it's just that we have to protect the vulnerable within our family against ......the crazy people...american terrorists,........ who will never see who we are.

17. If not for my 12 yr old .....not scary
at all....born/grew up in NYC in the 60's-70's. My parents come from a country where violence is natural.

My only brother came back with all sorts of screwed up stuff ...got/has foot root from being in the Vietnamese swamp..has nightmares. Survivor's guilt...I guess.

I was 8 when he was in Vietnam....I only remember my mom crying watching the news. My father being proud of my brother. I remember writing and sending him drawings/letters.

He came home and was solemn...took me to Havestraw, NY ...to our uncle's Rafael's house and how he taught me to shoot at cans when I was 11. He said that southerners made fun of city folks for not knowing how to shoot, so he was determined to teach me as his younger sister and his children how to shoot.

But I have 80 yr old parents (married 58 yrs) and young children, and want peace... and I don't understand why REPUBLICANS LEADERS want to push violence.

Terms like baby killer, nigger loving spic isn't exactly the way to gain new members...so they must want a civil war.

So let's do as Sarah says...time to reload....don't aim at moose, they mean you no harm.

20. Life is too short.....
to have to live with the mindset that is being perpetrated by these idiots. I'm sorry to hear your young children have to grow up in such a situation, though the turmoil seems to be everywhere. I put a lot of blame on the media in their search for ever increasing viewership. It seems the more outrageous the action or statement the more publicity it gets. Politicians, as you know, live for publicity.....and so it seems we have a vicious circle of ever increasing vicious circle of nasty actions.

18. Thank you
for caring...... and for letting me vent.

I am thinking of sending my kids to my parent's house in DR....in Santiago, where there are numerous English speaking schools and they will probably be safer than living in a red state where Republicans don't care about the safety of colored immigrants.
