Why are we so afraid of the dark that we feel we need to keep everything lit up like day?

10. There were fireworks over the bay here around 8:30
thought that was a strange way to celebrate earth hour, unless maybe they were some new, "green" fireworks. Went on for a long time, too, nearly twenty minutes. Turns out it was some construction company celebrating an anniversary-a few weeks ago Farmer's Insurance also had a fierworks display over the water to celebrate 100 years of business.
