Tom Poston has died
Edited on Tue May-01-07 06:04 PM by Bluebear

Condolences to Suzanne Pleshette, his widow.

http://www.etonline.com/tv/news/48006/
Emmy-winning sitcom sidekick TOM POSTON, who memorably starred alongside BOB NEWHART on "Newhart," passed away on Monday night. He was 85.

The veteran comic actor was nominated three times for an Emmy during his tenure as lovable lunk George Utley on the popular '80s show. He was also nominated for an Outstanding Guest Actor Emmy for his appearance on "Coach"; he won a Best Supporting Actor Emmy in 1959 for his role on "The STEVE ALLEN Show."

"The death ... of Tom Poston, a versatile and veteran performer and a kind hearted individual, comes as a great shock," Bob Newhart said in a statement. "He will be sorely missed and was an important part of the 'Newhart' family. Tom was always the 'go to guy' on 'Newhart' in addition to being a good and longtime friend," he added.

More recently, Poston had recurring roles on TV shows like "Committed" and "That '70s Show."

Poston is survived by his wife, "Bob Newhart" star SUZANNE PLESHETTE, as well as three children from previous marriages.

1. I had the good fortune to have worked with him on Grace Under Fire...
...believe me, in the final seasons, he was truly a rock when we needed one.

3. Yep. He was one of the good ones.
I remember watching him as a little kid as part of the team on Steve Allen. The others were Don Knotts & Louie Nye.
Funny, funny man.

I remember an odd William Castle film he was in called ZOTZ.

He'll be missed.

Don Ho had 13 kids....No wonder he didn't travel much-I just thought it was because he had a club there.

I loved that guy.

Geez, I remember him on freaking Steve Allen. My late dad was a fan.

His deadpan delivery was great comedy.

10. Yes, 85, he's been on a lot of shows,
Your Show of Shows I think, and Steve Allen's show in those "Man on the street" "interviews."

Dead pan comic, you don't see many of them anymore. Too bad, I love that type of humor.

Nobody ever said a bad word about him, either. Evidently a VERY nice man. And I thought it was sweet how he found love again, late in life.

15. Rest in Peace, Tom
Tom Posten was a throwback -literally!
I just read his obit over on MSNBC.com. Tom started his show biz career in a trapeze act. So many of the older performers were skilled at several performing arts - not just a singer, or an actor.
Tom was one of those performers that was with us (meaning "us" of a certain age) for all our lives. Always funny too!
Even before his great work on Newhart, I would see him occasionally in a film or TV - I always said his name - there's Tom Posten! Tom would get a laugh just by showing up.

Thanks for the laughs, Tom!

23. RIP Tom...You were one of the great dead-pan artists, much
like Buster Keaton.

Say hello to Steve Allen, and Kurt Vonnegut...there ought to be some great talk between you all...O8)

He did "Lovers and Other Strangers" in Syracuse (down the thruway from me) back in 73? 74? The local theater volunteers loved him, I recall.
