I've gotten into way too many fights on facebook today
over this healthcare legislation. My Congressman was one of the authors of the House bill and is one of the leading supporters of healthcare reform. I'm a "fan" of his on Facebook (and rallied outside his office yesterday).

There are always about 2-3 teabaggers who spew RNC talking points all over the comments and I just tell them off and use logic and try to make them defend some of the crap they're spewing. I've just about had it with this one.

Facebook users-- do you bother to become a "fan" of someone you oppose?

1. I hide the feeds of people who say stupid things.
They waste my time.

3. no - I don't need the stress of arguing
I've actually hidden the feeds from rw idiots from high school so I don't have to do it.

While I'd like to argue, I don't think it's good for my health to be constantly angry, so I only monitor feeds from people who won't raise my bp.

And I'm very careful about what pages I become a "fan" of.

6. I haven't become a fan of someone I oppose, but now that you
put the idea in my head, I might befriend Blackburn and Foxx.

11. Oooh, Foxx
Blackburn and Bachman, I couldn't waste 2 seconds of energy on. But that Foxx, I don't know what it is, but she just pisses me the hell off. It's like she ought to know better than to spout the shit she does.

7. Actually, yes I do!
My House Rep is Hensarling (R-TX). I made very sure I became a "Fan" so anytime he posted anything, I could post a rebuttal comment right under it. Over the last year, I've noticed more people making the same kinds of comments. Great to see.

8. Most of my FB friends are from my high school class. We used
it to organize our 30 year reunion. Almost no one posts anything political and if they do they are ignored by most of us.
Anyone that goes to my page can see, Media Matters, Michael Moore and the other stuff I support. Nobody gives me any crap about it.

14. I don't get into politics with any of my "friends" on FB.
Many of the people are those I went to high school with, and many of them have political views different from mine. I really don't care about that; FB is a great way for me to reconnect with people I haven't seen in years.

9. No.
And it's kind of weird, but none of the known Republicans ever post any right wing crap in my feed either.

My sister tried 3 times, but I just responded with facts. She quit.

Another is a huge Glenn Beck fan. I just quietly posted the most straight to the point articles I could find, maybe one every other day or so. He doesn't post anything political anymore.

Most of the rest are Democrats, many DUers.

10. yeah, I've unfriended 3 HS mates so far today.
I stand against this bill, but not for the wrong uninformed reasons my idiot fundie friends do. It's a real shame too. Some that I have known for over 20 years are posting pics from the code red rally. Some that I had no idea were even following the debate at all.

13. I'm a "fan" of Cornyn but -
only because he's "my" senator. Lucky me. I try not to be obnoxious about disagreeing with everything, but if there are clear distortions (especially from Cornyn himself, rather than his real fans) I'll post the facts. It makes me feel like maybe, possibly, my voice is being heard here in Bush Country. Plus I've always enjoyed banging my head against the wall.

15. I've unfriended 6 facebook friends
on account of their RW nonsense. Global warming denier? Unfriend. Fan of Glenn Beck? Unfriend. I don't become a fan of someone I oppose. I'll leave that to those who are skilled at arguing and don't take things personally.

19. mixing the personal with political imo is ridiculous
i don't judge my friends by their political views and to unfriend somebody because i disagree with them imo is silly.

i don't want to surround myself with a comfortable coccoon of people who only think like i do.

in my travels, i have found zero correlation between political beliefs and suitability/loyalty as a friend

20. They were "friends" from high school.
Not really friends at all, since that was 40+ years ago and I haven't seen them since then. But you make an excellent point. One of my real friends is a Rush-listening right winger. He's also an excellent person - loyal, generous, kind - just a great guy.

21. i can understand that
if it's just an old acquaintance (iow not a friend) and it turns out his (or hers) political views are just abhorrent, i can understand unfriending them. that's a different scenario and i agree

17. I'm a "fan" of Sarah Palin
Whatever new thing Palin puts out that she's doing, I normally post a few remarks about how she's just going to quit halfway through. :) I'm much beloved. (Not)

It can be fun. When she started that death panel thing on healthcare, some people did send me emails on FB, insisting I read a certain range of pages in the then-bill. I read them, understood how they could be twisting what it said into, "Death Panels," but kept reading as the next 5 pages or so provided better context. I then shut them down with logic, sprinkled liberally with various insults about their intelligence, ancestry, etc. One woman told me that people like me shouldn't be allowed to vote, and I told her that that was typical anti-American vitriol that her side always engaged in when dealing with people who don't share her opinions, and the founding fathers would be ashamed of her, etc. She resulted to cursing me out.

22. My FB is for games, like-minded friends
and some (but not all) old school chums. I've unfriended a few because of obvious racism, bigotry, etc. No one has attacked me yet but I have no problem unfriending a few beasts.
