those are the categories you get to choose from in the census form as I recall AFTER you pick your ethnicity/ nationality

If I was in Costa Rica or the Dominican Republic, I'm white. But if I'm in the USA, I'm brown, but there is no category for that. What todo? Not the most ridiculous form I've ever seen, but Census USA sure still doesn't get it.

1. They want you to pick based on your subjective understanding.

The rules are (or at least they where in 2000 when I was doing census work) that if someone who looked like Conan O'Brien said he was Black, I had to take him at his word and record the answer.

4. What amazes me is:

If you are Hispanic, Native American, or Asian/Pacific islander, they want to categorize you down to a very specific subgroup. If you are black, they do not care if you are US, Jamaican, Haitian, or African immigrant black. If you are white, they don't care if you are Irish, German, Polish, or Italian.

As between a Korean and a Japanese.

The whole thing seems just a bit strange to me.

7. Hispanic is not a race.

People of any color can be Hispanic. When I did census taking 10 years ago, we asked race, then we asked if the person was Hispanic.
