Don't buy the spin: public is still split over health care proposal

When you hear Republicans and talk show hosts say the country is overwhelmingly opposed to the health care legislation pending in Congress, don’t believe it.

And when you hear Democrats say momentum is building in recent weeks for the proposal, don’t believe that, either.

The fact is, the American public is pretty evenly divided over the proposal, as it’s been for months. Oh, there have been slight moves, with each side rising or dropping a few percentage points. But most reputable polls show the country split.

The new NBC-Wall Street Journal, a widely respected poll conducted jointly by a Democratic pollster and a Republican pollster, this week finds 36 percent think the Obama plan is a good idea, while 48 percent think it’s a bad idea.

2. The same way the public was split on Civil Rights and MediCare in the 1960s.
Now, 50 years later, very few would think of rescinding either one, and almost no one would support their elimination.

9. Talking polls is so much more relevant......
Edited on Thu Mar-18-10 07:03 PM by FrenchieCat
cause that's what's important,
because of course, we can't forget polls and what they say,
since that is what is important in the larger scheme of things....
not to forget what they say,
and of course, anyone talking about human lives, well,
they should be dismissed or at least mocked,
because, that's really just good old political football, doncha know? :sarcasm:

4. I wonder if many on either side fully understand the model

Pro may think its free equal universal health care for all, and free gas and rent money to never worry about again.

Con may think that government bureaucrats will reside in each doctor's office, rationing care to blonde, blue-eyed health Americans.

America is the land of extremes and ignorance at many times. Hyperbole or blind loyalty gets in the way of honest policy discussion

7. Most have only heard the shit slinging from both sides.
I would bet if you would ask the average person on the street to name some of the specifics from the plan, 90% couldn't tell you a damn thing.

8. One thing the Public is NOT "divided" on:
Less than 35% support Mandates without a Public Option.

10. Fox News poll today says 55% against vs 35% for. And if Fox is good enough for Obama...

11. How was the question worded?
I know Democrats who consider themselves "informed" that still believe "Obama's Plan" has a Public Option.

13. Ask the same people if...
...they support "Individual Mandates to BUY Health Insurance without a Public Option"
and see what happens to this poll.
Less than 35% will answer YES.

Better yet, ask:
* Would you favor or oppose the national government offering everyone the choice of a government administered health insurance plan — something like the Medicare coverage that people 65 and older get — that would compete with private health insurance plans?

Favor 82%

Oppose 14%

Not Sure 4%

This only leads me to believe that the majority of Americans have no idea WHAT is actually IN the "Democrat's Health Care Plan" OR "Obama's Health Care Plan".

I have talked to loyal Democrats who did due diligence during the campaign 2008, who consider themselves "informed", that DO NOT KNOW that the "plan" now is to require ALL Americans to BUY Health Insurance from For Profit vendors without an available Public Option.

For the Bait & Switch Con to work properly, it is necessary to keep The Mark confused.
