That was no normal nor'easter.
Despite some claims to the contrary, the nor'easter that stormed the northeast for three days reached hurricane force winds and left six dead in it's wake...

Another in a growing trend of severe weather?

"Shingles were flying off. It looked like the 'Wizard of Oz,'" said Angela Juno, 56, a school aide at Public School 277 who lost her roof and everything that was in the top floor of her home in Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn.

8. Well the wind might not have been as bad, but the amount of rainfall in Lowell
was more than I've seen before. Spent most of yesterday cleaning water out of a basement that's never seen more than a minor trickle of moisture before. I'm going to leave work early today to go work on it some more.

29. I am in Lowell, also!
:hi:

I had to go to 3 stores yesterday to find a wet/dry vac to get the water out of the basement. The most water we have had previously was a couple of little puddles. This time is was more than an inch in some places. I think we are going to put a sump pump in so that it never happens again. We seem to be getting these 100-year storms every 2 years or so now!

26. We live near Boston and had several inches of water in the basement
That hasn't happened for years, since the sealing on the basement was repaired. As I write this, it is STILL raining heavily outside. This is a bizarre storm, very far from average. The wind gusts seem less this morning, but with the soil so soaked, trees are easier to push over.

4. When you add heat to a system,
Global Warming and Extreme Weather

Studies show that global warming will increase the frequency or intensity of many kinds of extreme weather. While we can't attribute a particular heat wave or hurricane to global warming, the trends are clear: Global warming loads the atmospheric dice to roll "heat wave" or "intense storm" more often.

Topical Cyclone Tomas hit Fiji’s northern islands with a speed of 275 km/h (170 mph) along with heavy rains. The destructive storm is in Category 4 and the second most destructive in a five point scale. It is heading northeast and is expected to hit the main island Viti Levu. “The closest it will come is 200 km (124 miles) to the east of Suva,” said Alipate Waqaicelua, forecaster for the Nadi Tropical Cyclone Center. There has been night curfews implemented and schools were ordered to close till Thursday.

and there were a lot of trees down. We even saw one that missed the house, but got the car in the driveway.

20. The one in the early nineties was bad too.
Lasted for three full moon days and the high tides couldn't recede. Catastrophic flooding in some towns.

24. I literally could not see if I was about to get hit by a flying branch while driving home
Edited on Mon Mar-15-10 08:59 AM by HughMoran
The air would turn completely white the gusts were carrying so much water in them. There were so many trees & power poles down that it was extremely dangerous driving in these conditions - worse than driving in a blizzard for me.

Many, many people I know are pumping their basements during this new, current storm which is still howling today! The wind is so strong, it's literally temporarily stopped the blower in my air conditioner that I use to circulate air in my house. I'm so glad I got the tree guy in last week - way too many trees weakened from previous storms had 'hangers' on them (large hanging branches.)

and into the neighbor's yard. I'm hoping the old willow tree in her backyard holds up. The rain and wind aren't supposed to end here until tonight.
