Lawmaker Quits After Hot Tub Confession

Utah House Majority Leader Kevin Garn (R) announced that "he was resigning from the Utah Legislature, two days after revelations of a nude hot-tubbing incident with a minor 25 years ago and a payment to keep it quiet," the Salt Lake Tribune reports.

1. There is no indication in the article
.
.
.

or a further link in the article whether the "nude hot-tubbing incident" was voluntary,

or whether sex was involved.

"minors" definition changes from state to state; and country to country.

I was sort of amazed to find out when I lived in California in 1979 that a "minor" was under 21.

When I left Canada in late 1978 from Ontario, a "minor" was under 16.

So a sexual "incident" with anyone over 16 is not really shocking to me. (unless it's forced)

But they DID pay over 100 G's to "keep it quiet"

Doesn't mean to me that it was anything nefarious - politics REALLY get's screwed up over a bit of sex on the side - even a whisper of it . . .

BUT

it got BC out of office (well, his lying about it)

but then Hillary gets right back in the game in Obama's Administration . . .

Things that boggle the mind.

:freak:

4. This story was all over DU, but I hadn't read about the resignation.
Do a quick DU search in GD and you'll find out more than you'd ever want to know. Here's a start...

7. Ok - I read that - I still do not see abuse or force involved.
.
.
.

I have a different perspective up here, seeing that sexual relations are not illegal after 16, and in some situations, 14 . . .

always sorta confused me that sex was OK at 16, but ya couldn't drink until you were 19.

ANYHOO

I still don't see any crime here . . .

BAD move politically - yup

but for Cheryl to take the 150 grand - THEN decide to tell the story

makes me ponder.

What happened to that $150,000.00?

AND

this was 8 years ago? (the "sins")

OH, I get it

the $150,00 ran out? - or did she return it?

educate me

I repeat

What happened to that $150,000.00?

8. I imagine she spent the money if she got any which,
judging by her silence til now, is possible.
As for abuse, I don't think that ever entered into this conversation. It was the inappropriateness of his actions with a minor that did him in, I'm guessing.

9. ok - "inappropriateness" will kill a political career in a flash.
.
.
.

And like I indicated, "age of majority" depends on the state/country - so unless the participant is really young, or deceived somehow,

affairs with age differences don't give me a problem.

But we know it's political/news dynamite/suicide

Heck, Nixon was a REAL criminal, but BC got slammed for a stupid indiscretion - amazing that, really

now his wife Hillary is SOS!

life is strange . . .

and we're in it.

6. Any relation to Jake Garn? He was a Senator from Utah for quite a long time.
It was him and hatch for years.
