"Stop Robbing MUNI"

On March 1, 2010 hundreds of SF TWU 250-A drivers and riders rallied and marched against the attacks on public transit.

The San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom and his hand picked MTA board has sought to pit the drivers against the elderly, disabled and students.

He and his board demanded that they take concessions or fares would be increased on these people.

See the common thread?

If you protest the mass firings of teachers, they say: "But what about the children! Teachers' (laziness, ineffectiveness, high pay) is hurting *the children*!!!

If you protest the mass firing of transit workers:

"But what about the elderly & disabled? Those drivers' (high pay, laziness, big benefits package) is hurting the elderly & disabled!!!!"

No, the parasitical profit regime of the fat cats running this country, & the world, is hurting EVERYONE.

1. Last time I rode MUNI..
The driver got out of his seat twice to make sure a passenger in a wheelchair got off at the right stop. He couldn't stop at his requested stop, because there was no platform and that train was not equipped with a lift. At the stop, the driver apologized, unfolded the ramp, and wheeled the passenger onto the platform.

If the MUNI board cared about the disabled, they'd spring for a lift gate in every car.

2. It's Happened All Over...
The Chicago Transit Authority just cut back on many routes (predominately in poorer neighborhoods) and cut back service in many other areas. The problem is the same...no money. Tax coffers are not empty, they're in massive debt and there's no place to borrow from. Another "benefit" of all the tax cuts for the rich. Add to that the crash in property and retail taxes and things aren't getting any better any time soon.

So the option is to raise taxes or fares or both. Even if transit fares are doubled in most areas, it's still far cheaper than driving, parking and gas.

4. And if they did they would move and establish residency in another state
Many of these people have homes in other states. They just go there get drivers licenses and pay no taxes. This is happening in NY as we speak.
