Mormon scholars: Glenn Beck is ignorant on social justice in church
http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/03/11/christians-urged-to-boycott-glenn-beck/

Last week, the conservative broadcaster Glenn Beck called on Christians to leave their churches if they heard any preaching about social or economic justice because, he claimed, those were slogans affiliated with Nazism and Communism.

This week, the Rev. Jim Wallis, a liberal evangelical leader in Washington, D.C., called on Christians to leave Glenn Beck.

“What he has said attacks the very heart of our Christian faith, and Christians should no longer watch his show,” Mr. Wallis, who heads the antipoverty group Sojourners, wrote on his “God’s Politics” blog. “His show should now be in the same category as Howard Stern.”

Mr. Beck, in vilifying churches that promote “social justice,” managed to insult just about every mainline Protestant, Roman Catholic, African-American, Hispanic and Asian congregation in the country — not to mention plenty of evangelical ones.

Even Mormon scholars in Mr. Beck’s own church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said in interviews that Mr. Beck seemed ignorant of just how central social justice teaching was to Mormonism.

but where was their outrage when Beck was spewing hate that wasn't specifically attacking the interests of the church?

But thank goodness he's still not outside the mainstream of American political thought, so that his pronouncements will continue to be treated with deference and respect, as befits a member of the Village. Now, if he was some Dirty Fucking Hippie who didn't think the invasion of Iraq was going to be as quick, easy and cheap as the Bush administration said it was going to be early in 2003, then he'd have lost all credibility. I mean, it's okay to think that now, but seven years ago it meant you hated the troops and wanted the terrorists to win.

11. You can count on Wallis to get all huffy when his faith gets
slandered, but he's willing to sit around slandering others, splitting hairs from his book of deeply split hairs, as deeply dishonest about himself in relation to what he foists off as his faith. It short, he also hand picks select verses that apply to others, rejects hundreds that apply to himself, and uses his chosen weapons to prevent his neighbors from holding basic human rights. This is a thing he thinks Christ taught him to do, which is just so funny, because he is as off base as Beck, every bit. They are all the same, offended only on behalf of themselves, while treating others far worse than anyone treats them. Wallis criticizing Beck over theology? It is all made up, self edited, this is removed, that is added.
Don't they have any real work in the world that they could do?

22. He's a political operative...
that whips up hate in the dumbest right-wingers in the country and gives the left-wing a distraction from what's really going on.

He also serves as a reference point for the right-wing..."Hey, we've got some crazy ideas on the right we want you to believe, but at least they're not as crazy as THIS guy's ideas, look at him!"

19. He would call Jesus a communist too, for Matthew 25.
FTA: "Mr. Barlow said that Mr. Beck’s comments were particularly ill-timed because just this year, the church’s highest authority, the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, issued a new “Handbook of Instructions” to church leaders in which they revised the church’s “three-fold mission” and added a fourth mission statement: care for the poor."

There's quite a bit of FB activity from my christian friends, they are squirming or beginning to question Beck's statements. Of course I'm posting one article after another by Sojourners which calls out Beck for being so anti-gospel.

People like Beck HATE this part of the bible: "He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." Micah 6:8

20. Interesting....
Conservatives have said for years that governments shouldn't be funding social programs -- that's the role of churches and community groups.

Now Beck is saying that churches (and community groups, like ACORN) are evil, too.

Anybody who does anything to support the poor among us is a Communist/Atheist.
