Meth Program Could Get Cut

State Republican budget cuts could put an intensive meth recovery program on the chopping block.

South Dakota lawmakers laid out their plans for budget cuts, and $1.7 million in funding for the addiction recovery program was on the list of more than $40 million in cuts.

In 2003, a pilot program was developed to help prevent and treat meth users in the state and now part of that program could be cut out.

“They have had a 77 percent success rate, which is phenomenal and when you have that kind of a successful rate, to lose that program will have a ripple effect,” Darcy Jensen with Prairie View Prevention Services said.

The Intensive Meth Program offers a four-phase treatment for those in the Department of Corrections. It includes treatment through mentoring, counseling and group work.

Jensen says she's afraid if the program is cut, the effects will be felt not only in the prison system but other social systems and the costs will add up as the health department is forced to deal with higher numbers.

1. Cutting the effective programs once again
It's absolutely ridiculous when necessities are cut. The Republicans know nothing about good management and effectiveness.
