2. Not a saint.
Edited on Sun Mar-07-10 10:20 AM by Contrary1
A saint would not wish for those that criticize him to die "screaming of rectal cancer". Penn is an average man who chooses to share his wealth and talent to help those who are in need. I respect him for that.

But, as my mother would say, "A saint he ain't".

3. I was just about to say that myself...
I have a friend who had surgery for rectal cancer almost two years ago. She has no lower bowel.

She is disgusted beyond belief with him for WISHING it on anyone....even his enemies.

4. That was only after he was pushed for an answer
Put yourself in Sean's place going out and picking up the sick and the hurt
and taking them back to get medical care so they can just live and then hearing
about people critical of his actions.

And his comments were not just for all people who criticize him but those who are
critical of his work in Haiti to save the poor and needy from more hurt.

The man is giving of his time and money and those who try to run down his really
good works by trying to tie him to the myth of the "hollywood liberal" as they
scream their love for Jesus are contemptible. At one time Florence Nightgale
and Clara Barton were criticized for not knowing their place in the world.

5. 'Wishing' anything on anyone has zero effect.
Edited on Sun Mar-07-10 11:43 AM by piratefish08
The true spirit of a person is in their actions, not their words.

I would rather have ONE Sean Penn doing something, than a million people praying to saints for results.

You go, Spiccoli! Righteous.

9. Well, wouldn't there be cases where that's not the case?
the true measure of a person being actions, not words, I mean.

What if, for the sake of discussion, you're married to someone who treats you very well, but is constantly using mean and hurtful words to, and against, you?

What if this person never raises a hand toward you...always does what's expected of him/her...but calls you names all the time?

Do you just forget the words?

Verbal abuse (words) is just as damaging as physical abuse (actions) is. Sometimes it's worse.

Believe me, I've been with people whose ACTS toward me were exemplary, but their words were not. That sort of thing is not acceptable.

10. Verbal Abuse?
Please. He is going out of his way and spending his time, money, and a good chunk of
his life helping people in need and when pushed about what he thinks about the
people who wish him ill for doing the right thing he gives an honest answer.

11. I'll qualify my statement. In a situation like you describe, your hurtful words ARE your actions.
Penn's case - an offhand comment to a critic, probably made through the press - is not the same thing.

Penn made a single shitty comment to a man whose JOB is to make shitty comments.

If the critic in this case considered that to be 'abuse' like you describe, then he needs to find another line of work.

7. Helping people in a disaster is being a decent
human being! Anger at critics for being a decent human being is a normal reaction. If I recall correctly, he was up front and center during the Katrina disaster also..I remember seeing him in a boat helping to rescue people.

8. Penn is a humanitarian.
Anyone who thinks that Penn's 'evil wish' should trump this and his many other kind actions might just be a little overly superstitious.

I've wished MANY times that Bush would suffer and experience the day that karma comes after his sorry ass.

I also realize that my wish is just meaningless mumbling.
