Exclusive: Famed NYT reporter tells Michael Moore capitalism driving humanity’s downfall
http://rawstory.com/2010/03/capitalism-love-story-exclusive-clip/

By Raw Story
Saturday, March 6th, 2010 -- 10:44 am

In his film Capitalism: A Love Story, Michael Moore squares off with the free-market system for its role in leveraging the United States's wealth into the hands of a few.

But in one clip cut from the documentary -- which Moore provided exclusively to RAW STORY -- he interviews Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporter Chris Hedges, who explains how capitalism is actually contributing to the very downfall of the human race and the "degradation of the planet."

14. I prefer the term "tinkle on economics" over trickle down economics.
Edited on Sun Mar-07-10 10:20 AM by glitch
It's more accurate, less euphemistic.

edit: pee-on is perfect!

17. check out this summary from Hedges' book:
"Chris Hedges argues that we now live in two societies: One, the minority,
functions in a print-based, literate world, that can cope with complexity and can separate illusion from truth.
The other, a growing majority, is retreating from a reality-based world into one of false certainty and magic. In this “other society,” serious film and theatre, as well as newspapers and books, are being pushed to the margins."

from a review of :
Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle (ISBN 9781568584379) was published in July 2009.

2. Sweeney Todd Pretty Much Sums It Up
"there's men devouring men out there / who are we to ignore it in here?"

85% of us have gone from merely being a labor force to being the actual resource to be mined. It's frightening.

12. Nicely put.
OUR government has been stealing from and repressing people of other countries
and/or skin color for almost 200 years,
The problem NOW is it has decided to openly treat US in the same manner.

There's the rub.

4. It's too bad we won't go down by ourselves,
we have to take most of the species with us. Gaia will survive us and she will repopulate. It's just a damn shame we had to go and be so suicidal (she types on her computer - fully realizing the painful irony).

9. You'll get no argument from me
Gaia's time span makes us look like what we are, a blip on the radar. I know in the overall, Gaia will be fine. But I hate having a front row seat to the decimation of all these other species. I feel culpability and sadness. As far as I know, no one with sentience was around to mourn the other mass extinctions or to be at fault for them. It is said that we are the mind of Gaia, we are the ones who contemplate her. But I see insanity in the mind of Gaia and it hurts.

10. Yep, cockroaches in all their myriad of forms will likely survive us
maybe they'll even get cockroachy sentience in a few million years. That's a disgusting thought but then, humans aren't exactly less disgusting, so there you have it.
