Edited on Fri Mar-05-10 10:05 PM by Orrex
My grandfather invented the technique by which the bottom end of a toothpaste tube is folded over and pinched shut, so that every time someone polishes their pearly whites, I get a nickel.

Other than that, I'm in sales.

63. I met her over thirty years ago - she was in her fifties then
She's still around, but we do not move in the same circles, never did really. I bought a horse from her and she was just as down to earth as any other person handling livestock - she even helped me load the horse in the trailer.

If I remember correctly, her grandfather invented the brown paper bag in the late 1800s.

Shit, stuff like this makes me feel so old, to realize that most people these days never have met or had meaningful conversations with people who remember the 1800s. I grew up with people of that generation telling me stories about their childhoods and their memories of their parents. I even had a step greatgrandmother who remembered the Civil War.

Now I'm turning into one of those old people...

59. More... Ironic, I Think...
I had my fantasy job in 2000. Working on a network for a small telecom.

The combination of dotcom bust and 9/11 sent the company down the tubes.

Lost job, spent savings, spent 401K, ran out of unemployment benefits...

Then got a part-time job with EDD. Turned full-time permanent.

Over the last 2 years the workload has quadrupled, and we've been docked 15% of our pay due to furloughs.

Funny thing... or ironic thing... in this economy, I'm one of the "lucky" ones.

And I see the evidence of devastation fly by me on the high-speed scanner every day.

I love doing the paperwork, the organizing, filing, record keeping, etc. I like doing the work behind projects - I've watched my bosses that had to go to endless meetings, give speeches, cut ribbons, and do that dance... you know the one... the handshaking, pretend belly laughing, networking stuff... oy... I used to work for TV execs and had to listen to them working the phones, I'd be like OMG, where's my barf bag? There is not enough money in the world to make me want to be a "Hollywood producer!"

My company is relocating to Texas soon so I will have to look for another gig. :( I'm sure I won't like it as much as my current one. My boss is just the coolest.

What I really, really don't ever want to go back to doing is phones. If I see an ad that says "busy phones," well if I get desperate, but LAST CHOICE!

I mean I would have to be very, very desperate to go back to "get so and so on the phone" and the little dance you have to do when each ego-d out asshole wants the other to be the one to be waiting etc etc!!! Oh ag-o-neeee!

141. Project Manager
for an energy services company in Southern California. I've been in this business for nearly 30 years and up until now, when the economy was bad my business was good - people wanted to save money (we do energy efficiency projects). Yet, today the trend is not holding. Our customers want to implement energy efficiency projects, but their corporate decision-makers don't want to spend the money. Credit has dried up, and our projects are drying up with it.

It's a very different time today.

163. This is my favorite question. What I do to make money is not important to who I am.
I am John Brady. I head the Burbank Human Relations Council. The BHRC is one of the oldest civil rights organizations in Los Angeles County. We have always stood for building an American culture based on equality, justice, respect, and common human decency toward all who live here.

Our allies and, at times, adversaries have been the City, the police, the School Board, and anyone in power that has influence in our community.

Until recently I have shied away from calling myself a civil rights leader. That was until I got on the wrong side of some people in power. They tried to mash me up pretty good. I lost some territory but came out the hero. Someone I did not know referred to me as "someone who has stellar credentials fighting racism". I still get teary eyed about that. I didn't know people I didn't know...noticed.

So I am a civil rights leader now. A minor league civil rights leader... but I can suit up now. :patriot:

178. County Civil Service Commissioner for the past year, though officially I am retired...
At various times I was a secretary, an admin assistant, went back to grad school and got a PhD in a subject everyone else thinks is blissfully useless (Mythological Studies) which is the hazard of doing any doctoral program, was an County Affirmative Action Commissioner for 12 years, various other volunteer stuff that's interesting and (I hope) worthwhile ...

The Commissioner gigs are political appointments via the County Board of Supervisors. The AAC was completely gratis and sadly, that commission no longer exists, although I think it did good work in its 30 years.

CSC turns out to have a stipend per meeting and per hearing, which is pleasant. It goes into my bank account with my teensy pension from the university, and my Social Security check that I started getting last fall at age 62.

Mostly I tend to discount the effects that health had on my willingness to leave the 40-hour work week as early as I did (about 20 years ago), and thereafter stick to part-time and volunteer work, but once in awhile waking up feeling like a shipwreck somehow brings it all back... and reminds me why I am so damn grateful that I don't have to get up at 6 am every day and haul ass into an office.

I love what I'm doing now in my supposed retirement.

Hekate

mostly illegible, and then I help organize the resulting blizzard of paperwork. I do this all without the benefits provided to more deserving others by my benevolent bosses through the miracles wrought by and delivered by: 1)Big pharma reps, whose pseudo in-services a.k.a. Olive Garden luncheons I try to avoid and 2)Insurance company contracts and "policies" to squirm out of payments so that their big benevolent bosses can get ever-bigger bonuses...

It's just all wishful thinking that I'd actually do it FT to be better able to afford to make use of my masters' life-extending services and potions, but those furrin' elephant luvers do it so much better and for so much less money!

Like the song says:

224. machinist.
i'm technically a toolroom machinist, i do fixtures, tooling, prototypes, etc. my company has been making my job very difficult for me, and pushing me towards engineering, which would be more responsibility and a title but no more pay, there is no more pay to be had. after reading this thread though, i need to resist the move, the world needs people like me doing what i do.

FWIW the production machinists, operators, now make minimum wage. some are guys with much more experience than me, they hustle their asses off running several machines to hang on to the shitty job they have.

We are a Mom-and-Pop enterprise selling at our store in Austin and over the internet - www.dogstuff.com - everything pertaining to dogs: Art, stationery, gifts, tabletop, toys (both dog and human), holiday decorations, food and supplies. Every online order generates a donation to rescue, too, and we support rescue in dozens of ways.

We have some cat stuff, too!

My hobby is breeding and showing my Golden Retrievers.

UPS to be exact solid benefits. At school I am a History and Spanish major and will either teach high school or elementary ESL. My job is hard work but the killer benefits mean I don't plan on burning bridges. I might hold on the job for a few years even when I would be teaching, get enough cash for a down payment on a nice little house.

teacher. College at night and taking the girls to nursery school and kindergarten during the day. Next fall is student teaching and then I am done. One more year and my youngest will be in school full time so then I am back to looking for a job after a few years. I already have a degree in psych so all I had to do was get a certificate to teach preschool. I can't wait.
