CONSERVATIVES Turn Against LIZ CHENEY - As BAD As McCarthy
The backlash is growing against Liz Cheney after she demonized Department of Justice attorneys as terrorist sympathizers for their past legal work defending Gitmo detainees -- and now it's coming from within deeply conservative legal circles.

On Friday, the conservative blog Power Line put up a post titled, "An Attack That Goes Too Far." Author Paul Mirengoff, called Cheney's effort to brand DoJ officials the "Al Qaeda 7," "vicious" and "unfounded" even if it was right to criticize defense lawyers for voluntarily doing work on behalf of Gitmo detainees.

Reached on the phone, Mirengoff offered an even sharper rebuke, declaring that what Cheney was doing was comparable if not potentially worse than the notorious anti-communist crusades launched by Sen. Joseph McCarthy.

"It could be worse than some of the assertions made by McCarthy, depending on some of the validity of those assertions," Mirengoff said, explaining that at least McCarthy was correct in pinpointing individuals as communist sympathizers. "It is just baseless to suggest that share al Qaeda values... they didn't actually say it but I think it was a fair implication of what they were saying."

Mirengoff isn't alone among conservative legal theorists who think the ad campaign by Cheney's group, Keep America Safe, is distasteful. In a statement to the American Prospect, John Bellinger III, a former legal adviser to Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, called the effort "unfortunate."

"It reflects the politicization and the polarization of terrorism issues," Bellinger said. "Neither Republicans nor Democrats should be attacking officials in each other's administrations based solely on the clients they have represented in the past."

1. We need more people to point out the McCarthy like
tendencies of the far right and the 'tea' partiers...

8. Why is so much air time and print ink being allocated for Liz Cheney's political views?
Seems they're prepping the stage for a coming theatre act.

" It's hardly news that Bill Kristol is a rank propagandist responsible for some of the most destructive falsehoods in our political culture, but now that the Post Editors explicitly recognize this, doesn't it speak volumes about them if they continue (as they will) to employ such a person as a regular Columnist? And which will be the first television news organization to present Kristol's wretched McCarthyite comrade, Liz Cheney, as a Sunday morning panelist to opine as some sort of expert on various political matters of the day? Do news organizations recognize any responsibility at all with regard to those who try to spawn a disgusting witch hunt like this?

16. I am, on reflection, just thinking more people, on both sides
need to start calling out all people of this ilk and saying "HAVE YOU NO SHAME?" Even if it is rhetorical....

17. SHOUTING IT OUT would be the operative phrase. Time to stand up and be counted for what is right.

19. I agree with you wholeheartedly! I don't think your sentiments are ' low key ', in fact, they are
exactly what the doctor ordered to repair these failings. From what I see, we, as Democrats, continue to allow OTHERS to shape and define our Democratic values and positions. We allow ourselves to become second guessed by OTHERS on issues that impact our daily lives forcing us to constantly adjust & reconsider other watered-down versions that eventually rears its depleted head as being nowhere near the original issue we voted for and demanded in the first place. We continue to allow ourselves to wallow, hem and haw, complain and then retire back into that familiar political fetal position mumbling senseless drivel to ourselves accepting once again that ' its politics as usual '. Time to stand up and be counted and call out the bullshit on ALL sides whenever it rears its fat, ugly head.

9. They are all mad, some madder than others. 'even if she's right
about people volunteering to help someone ON PRINCIPLES!' (my remarks and rough paraphrase) They still believe McCarthy got commies. I remember that time. She has the same stinking uriny reek of McCarthy. What a fat assed coward she is. SHe has never had to find her own livelihood and she has had her pig snout in the public trough all her life. she's demented and I loathe her.

7. Maybe they should have thought about that beforehand
Seriously, I've got no respect for conservatives who've sat with their thumbs up the ass, crowing in favor of the dingbats, right up until the dingbats come after them. Then it's all "You go too far!"

Fuck 'em. They might be right, but they're hypocritical shitsmears.

...only one of whom compared her to McCarthy.

I don't think even television coverage could make this look like a "backlash."

14. These are dangerous people and everyone should be on full alert to question, watch & scrutinize
their every move and comments. After watching Liz parade around the networks over the last year spewing out the same insane doctrine of the last eight years, it definitely would seem (MHO) that Darth is orchestrating & positioning his seed to takeover his reign & continue the Cheney manifesto.
