How About an American Flag Law by Dems?
Edited on Sun Feb-28-10 05:44 PM by louis c
remember when the burning the flag amendment years ago put Dems against the wall? I remember. How's this law look to you?

"No American flag, or any merchandise that displays the Flag, Emblem or National insignia of the United States of America shall be sold within the boarders of the United States of America unless that item is entirely produced by American labor, including, but not limited to, the material on which said symbol is attached and all ancillary parts, material and items included in the finished product. Violators shall be fined at a rate of not more than $1,000 per infraction and not more than one year in federal prison for a first offense and not more than five years nor less than one year for a second and all subsequent offenses".

1. There's more important things to worry about than authoritarian, pandering demagoguery right now. nt

4. I don't think so.
I'm sick and tired of so called patriotic Americans displaying hats and shirts with the American flag and other logos, only to find out that they're made in China.

You want to put the right wing on it's heels? This is how. You know why? Because it's easy to understand.

6. I don't want to put the right on its heels by jailing people for trivial non-offenses.
Pathetic, authoritarian, nationalist bullshit that doesn't do anything other than cram overloaded prisons and let people say they voted on a feelgood piece of legisation - that they have no business feeling good about in the first place - when they could be spending that time passing laws that actually do something useful.

3. Add that no facsimile of the flag should be worn
as an article of clothing unless worn by those whose physics enhance the appearance of our flag.

5. Dumb
Every repub would vote for it. Some Dems wouldn't. We'd end up with a dumb law and no political benefit.

Dumb.

8. This is a "made in America" law
Edited on Sun Feb-28-10 06:03 PM by louis c
Every union in the country has this in its platform. This is a left wing law. Every liberal Dem would vote for it and every "free trade Republican" would scream bloody murder.

It's the opposite of Dumb, my Friend.

7. Cynical
but it might work.

I'm not sure all the Repubs would vote for it. They would come up with some BS argument against it.

9. "A democrat proposed it, therefore it's bad" would be their standard such argument
If the Obama administration tried to outlaw homicide the GOP'd campaign on a folks-need-killin' platform anyway.

12. If our economy started downhill
when we passed trade laws that harmed American workers, don't you think we should at least start enforcing trade laws by demanding that our flag be made here?

What the fuck? If we can't tell so called patriotic Americans that they should only buy American flags made in America, how in the hell can we enforce any trade policy?

14. So Americans would not be able to buy art from a non-American citizen if that piece of art contains

an American flag emblem or national insignia? Certianly such an act deserves prison, right.

16. Come on, you get the point
Edited on Sun Feb-28-10 09:27 PM by louis c
we can find a whole host of exceptions. but the fact remains all of our jobs are overseas, and we don't even make the fucking American flag here anymore. How much more disgraceful can free trade be. Where the fuck are the jobs going to come from?

I don't think we should allow a single manufactured good into this country until we restore our own manufacturing base. You can trace the decline of the American economy to two fundamental causes. The destruction of labor unions and the institution of free trade agreements. If we can't force the manufacturing of the God damned American flag in America, we really are a dead country.

Where do you suppose the Chinese flag is made, or the Russian, or the British, or the Italian?

Only the Assholes here think it's a good idea to make their own flag somewhere else.

You know what, you're right, we really do suck.
