'Green Queens' lead charge to clean up environment

Heidi Johnson just can't pass up a piece of trash.

Whether she's walking her dogs in her downtown Columbia neighborhood or hiking in remote woods, Johnson picks up litter.

The director of Keep the Midlands Beautiful, Johnson said trash discourages new business, keeps tourists away and makes neighborhoods unstable.

"The only way we're going to beat these problems is if people have ownership and pride in our community," Johnson said.

Starting Monday, Keep the Midlands Beautiful is encouraging civic, neighborhood and other groups to pick up trash as part of the annual Great American Cleanup.
