Chile quake 2010 update: Over 300 people dead
Source: The Next Reporter

Chile’s 8.8-magnitude quake that occurred Saturday is reported to have killed more than 300 people.

The massive earthquake struck the country at 3:34 a.m. (1:34 a.m. EST) that caused its people to rise up from bed and onto the streets.

“It came in waves and lasted so long. Three minutes is an eternity. We kept worrying that it was getting stronger, like a terrifying Hollywood movie,” a Santiago resident said.

The recent Chile quake was the world’s fifth largest since 1900.

The government of Chile stated that the death toll will not increase dramatically in the following days.

1. 300 people too many
But thank God it wasn't a quarter million.

2. It's gonna goway higher.
8.8 will defeat lots of 'modern' safety upgrades.

Sad to see DUERS compare severe tragedies.

They're all sad. No matter where they are.

But the death toll is going to be severe.

3. It looked like most of the buildings held together well enough
for people to get out of them, at least with help. It happened in the wee hours, so people weren't out and about where they would have been struck by falling debris. There was likely a very large loss of life on the roads.

Any increase in the number will come from the countryside, I think.

4. I am with you.
Dead is dead. Every life lost is a family affected.
