News from the Quake Zone
My wife spoke to her sister who has been staying at their place in southern Chile since Christmas. Eva said that she had to cling to her mattress with both hands to keep from being tossed out of bed. Their place was on the shore of Lake Villaricais, but the lake has sunk 65 feet (meters?); we're not clear on this. She said all the boat docks are gone. (During the last big quake one of their neighbors lost 16 acres to the lake.) My nephew, who lives in a suburb of Santiago said the quake splashed 2/3 of the water out of his swimming pool. No injuries in the family, but communications are ify at best.

3. Have been watching Chilean TV and so far nothing on Lake Villarrica
Edited on Sun Feb-28-10 01:01 AM by rabs
Years ago when I lived in Chile we would go fishing for salmon trout at that lake. Volcano in background is also named Villarrica. Beautiful place. Hope your sister-in-law stays safe.

edit to fix typo.

4. Very best wishes to your family.
It sounds like Chile has it pretty together in their rescue/reclaimation efforts, at least that I've been able to read. You will let us know if there are any "home grown" efforts out that we can help with?

So glad your kin are okay.

5. Here's an update from Lake Villarica, Chile
Lake Villarica lies at the foot of a hyperactive volcano of the same name about 550 miles south of Santiago. My sister-in-law and her husband have a house in a family compound at the western end of the lake near the town of Pucon. Eva said that she has power and water, but the lake has sunk 50 meters. They still have a beach, but it ends at a 160 foot drop-off. They measured.

6. Wow.
:wow:

Mother Nature doesn't fuck around. I'm glad all they lost was part of their beach.

7. ABC has good coverage of the coastal areas
complete devastation - some waves were as big as 30 feet.
The Chilean navy is being blamed for failing to sound the tsunami alarm on the coast.
