Alcohol FOUR TIMES more likely to cause psychosis than cannabis in teens
courtesy of Fumesucker, because it's too much fun to point out the obvious propaganda value.

http://www.schizophrenia.com/prevention/streetdrugs.htm...

Experts estimate that between 8% and 13% of all schizophrenia cases are linked to marijuna / cannabis use during teen years. It is also notable that some research suggests that alcohol abuse is a stronger predictor of psychotic symptoms than regular cannabis use (by a factor of four).

all I've got to say is I want to get the drug dealers out of the school parking lots and into the cannabis stores. they can sit right beside the alcohol stores.

3. er.... did you forget to consider use rates (both numbers, and frequency) of the two drugs?
Edited on Sat Feb-27-10 11:11 PM by enki23
that may well be true. if it is, it may or may not be due to the much higher rates of alcohol use.

5. It looks by the way it's worded that use rates are factored in..
If someone didn't use a given drug it wouldn't be a "predictor"..

7. Experts?

What "experts?" The DEA's academic prostitutes? There are far more reliable experts, such as Dr. Lester Grinspoon, MD, Ph.D, Professor of Psychiatric Medicine at Harvard Medical School, who will readily refute this circuitously introduced Reefer Madness claim.

I have known more regular marijuana users than I can recall, many of them respected professional persons, none of whom ever manifested the slightest degree of psychosis of any kind, so I reject this nonsense out of hand as being nothing more than sponsored propaganda. The only negative effect I am aware of as deriving from the regular use of cannabis is short-term memory degradation, which is why it is not good for young people, particularly students, to use it.

Because of a number of states having recently legalized medical marijuana, which suggests the possibility of decriminalization in the near future, I've been expecting a barrage of anti-pot propaganda and this looks like the opening shot.

But, as far as alcohol use is concerned, there is no question that it causes a great deal more mental sickness than a sampling of schizophrenia. It drives many users to psychopathic homicidal and suicidal violence, whereas the only problem I'm aware of from using marijuana is informally known as the munchies.

9. It Appears
that teens pre-disposed to schizophrenia may tend to self medicate with some substance, be it cannabis or alcohol. I will say during college, the parties with booze had fights and other acts of aggression while the pot parties ended with lots of laughter.

10. So? "Statement A is true, but I have shown that statement B is true as well, so statment A is wrong"
That is what I see implied here.
