President Obama has signed the extension of the Patriot Act
WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama has signed a one-year extension of several provisions in the nation's main counterterrorism law, the Patriot Act.

Provisions in the measure would have expired on Sunday without Obama's signature Saturday.

The act, which was adopted in the weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks, expands the government's ability to monitor Americans in the name of national security.

Three sections of the Patriot Act that stay in force will:

_Authorize court-approved roving wiretaps that permit surveillance on multiple phones.

_Allow court-approved seizure of records and property in anti-terrorism operations.

_Permit surveillance against a so-called lone wolf, a non-U.S. citizen engaged in terrorism who may not be part of a recognized terrorist group.

12. If he didn't sign it and kept the bill, it becomes law. To veto he would return bill unsigned to
Congress within 10 days with his objections to the measure. Then Congress would have opportunity to override the veto. (Exception: "pocket veto" when Pres doesn't sign & Congress is adjourned.)

26. I don't.
Then again, I didn't vote for Obama. I pegged him as a corporate sell-out from the get-go. Believe me, I would LOVE nothing more than to have been proven wrong. Sadly, that just hasn't happened.

I voted third party. Judging from the way the Dem party is going, I expect to do the same in the next election.

... some of those parties are progressive even.

The whole concept of voting with your conscience and not for the lesser of two evils, seems down right foreign for the majority of voters in the society self elected as leader of the free democratic world. LOL.

84. Well, if you read my post, and as others here have pointed out,
I voted third party.

If I viewed Obama as a corporate sell-out and hence, didn't vote for him, what makes you think that I would even remotely entertain the thought of voting for McCain/Palin? And I'm asking that sincerely. I don't mean to come across as "calling you out" or anything like that because that's not my intention at all. I just want to try to understand what in my post made you think I was a McCain/Palin supporter. TIA for any explanation you can offer that would clarify the matter for me.

You didn't come off as nasty and I didn't take it that way. I was just curious, that's all.

And rest assured I'm about as far from being a Freeper as they get, LOL. My low post count probably threw you. Freepers would most likely call me a Socialist Commie-Pinko Freedom-Hating Terrorist-Loving Anti-American Liberal. Then again, they'd probably pin that same label on a lot of the people here.

No, I'm definitely not a Freeper and am probably to the left of a lot of people here. It's all good.

85. I learned this lesson under Clinton. The Dems are full of posers.
Many things we hate under Repubs become acceptable under Democrats. To be blunt, there's a lot of people who talk the talk but have no clue how to walk the walk. They'll try to bully you into thinking they're right, they'll play every Repub style card they hold, but in the end they're phony fucks. But hey, put a "D" in front of their name and the people fall right in line. I have no words for the cowards I see here daily. And if I did the mods would clean it up quick, playing right into their hands. DU has become almost worthless due to this. Either the mods and admins stand up or go along silently. The choice is on them.

88. It doesn't happen often.
But I'm having a real hard time biting my tongue here lately. And when I don't it gets deleted. Like this administration, the mods and admins want to play patty cake with the pretenders and Johnny come latelys, and I'm just not up for it. Never have been, never will. I'll get booted before the Admins stand up (not so much the mods fault, they follow directions and I don't blame them for that). And so be it. Not to sound like Walt Starr, but I'm ready to go at any moments notice. Trust me, I can live with it. In fact, it's getting to the point where being on DU is almost sadder than not being on DU.

PS ~ Did I spell "latelys" right? ;)

Democrats retreat from adding new privacy protections to the law
Associated Press
February 24, 2010

In agreeing to pass the bill, Senate Democrats retreated from adding new privacy protections to the USA Patriot Act.

The Senate approved the bill on a voice vote with no debate. It now goes to the House.

Supporters say extending the law enables authorities to keep important tools in the fight against terrorism. It would also give Democrats some cover from Republican criticism that the Obama administration is soft on terrorism.

Some Democrats, however, had to forfeit new privacy protections they had sought for the law.

"I would have preferred to add oversight and judicial review improvements to any extension of expiring provisions in the USA Patriot Act," said Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. "But I understand some Republican senators objected."

No debate.

No roll call vote.

But rolling over before some Republican objections is acceptable.

Disgusting behavior.

Why didn't just one Democratic Senator demand a roll call vote?

The people Obama works for (Ownership Class) FEAR a general uprising of the American Working Class & the Poor.

As the Wealth Gap continues to widen, the Ownership Class believes that the provisions of the Patriot Act will allow them to suppress discontented Americans should they begin to collectively realize that they are being screwed by BOTH political parties.

58. That's what I think too. What you refer to as the Ownership Class
I refer to as the MIC (Men In Charge). Obama is a lackey for the MIC. He was groomed for the Presidency by them after it became apparent the Republicans needed a time-out. It is now transparently obvious where his allegiance lies. Beat goes on. Only way I'll vote next time is if John Dean or Skinner runs.

Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are in control of the transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will turn up the volume. If we want it softer, we will turn it down. We control the horizontal and the vertical. We can alter the internal linkfocus, to sharpen or distort the picture. For the next 1056 day's , we will control all that you see and hear. Believe me, there is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to take an adventure. You are about to experience the awe which is associated with a journey to - The Outer Limits of credible belief."

That's some change for ya fella's

106. When this piece of shit bill was passed in the middle of the night
with virtually no lawmakers having read it, we were told, "It's ok don't worry this is not permanent, it has a "SUNSET Clause".

Yeah here we are 9 fucking years later and now a fucking Democrat is renewing this garbage. So much for beautiful sunsets eh...
