Navy scrambling from Hawaii
that I get. They are also scrambling in San Diego, according to CNN.

I wonder just how wost case they think this wave is for cali...

Hawaii makes more than just perfect sense...

Let's just hope the tsunami does not compound things in other places.

1. Just a pre-emptive move on the side of caution.. Imagine if something happened to even ONE ship
Republicans would stampede to the nearest microphone and denounce Obama for being careless and clueless about "military matters"..and they would harangue him for "endangering lives".

5. This is not the CIC giving that order
this is SOP... they most have seen something in the data coming from every where else that concerns them.

They are following protocol.

16. And Democrats would do likewise
Lambasting the military for wasting so much taxpayer investment like its a disposable toy. I remember this very thing happening during Hurricane Andrew when several Air Force jets in Florida were destroyed because they hadn't been evacuated.

2. Heading out to sea from California may be overly cautious,
but the scramble is good practice if nothing else.

4. Could be.
But then again those are multi-million dollar pieces of equipment and even if they only slammed into the pier they were tied to and caused some damage, it'd be a pretty big embarassment.

3. Odds are that neither Hawaii or California will
be hit that hard, but it's a good exercise for the Navy to bug out.

I expect little to no damage to anything in either place. Maybe some chaise longues washed out from the beaches in Hawaii, but that's about it.

It's better to be cautious, though, and have nothing happen than to do nothing and have the worst happen.

6. Dime on the dollar that the flooding in Ocean Beach
will be worst than you expect.

Realize it does flood... and we have a storm surge from the winter storm on top of the Tsunami.

I have an apartment on a second floor... so we should be fine in the absolute worst case possible (which is not going to happen mind you, and it is not in OB... just in a flood valley near the coast)

Watching this on the TV in a hospital in OH where the white stuff is just falling, and falling, and falling and falling.

I'll take tsunamis and quakes over the white stuff.

:-)

Yes, I am serious... driving in snow is just a bad reminder of really flowy and sandy mud...

17. Actually I don't
the Tijuana River Valley saw an effect... as well as OB.

You may debate whether it was the tsunami's two footers, or the storm surge or the rain or a combo of all, which is most likely, but there was something that was observed by emergency personnel.

As usual the areas that do flood, did flood. This is the way this works.

:-)

Helps to know the damn geography and the damn disaster plans.

Now La Jolla was the place of measurement, and not chiefly the bay... Scripps Institute of Oceanography is there.

Oh and lifeguards also saw an effect.

Now my question to you is this... would you rather be right and go ha, ha or see a disaster? Me I'd rather have you be right than see the worst case scenario (and I have seen the damn disaster plans too, hell I helped write one)

10. Can you imagine being a guy who has to say, " WHO KNEW?"
In a case like this I'd really rather be the guy saying, "We took every precaution to protect our people's lives and I am happy to report that all are safe."

We have warning capabilities now that did not exist in 1960, I am happy to see them put to good use.

7. This makes perfect sense.

It is not the wave that the navy has to worry about, it is the receding water that will damage the multimillion dollar sonar domes if they drag the bottm of the harbor.

8. Is it possible they're leaving San Diego and going to Hawaii
...to assist in any relief efforts needed there?

11. An 8.8 is a rather huge quake.
I would think it wise to be prepared for a good size tsunami.
They tend to come in multiple waves with sometimes long intervals,
so erroring on the side of caution and all that is a good idea, it would seem.

14. They're always "scrambling" after the event has taken place or when nothing is going to happen
They're not there when they're needed plus... what can they possibly do?
