The problem is that not only are the polls McConnell quoting bogus as a reflection of what the American people want in terms of healthcare, the way he chooses to use them and frame them are also bogus.
In the first place, the bill in question is the senate bill and many Democrats have opposed that bill because its not liberal enough and didn't contain a public option. In fact Tom Harkin said of the bill that passed the senate, " It's better than nothing". Not exactly a ringing endorsement.
Secondly many of the healthcare polls simply asked if people approved of Obama's handling of healthcare and again many Democrats disapproved of Obama's handling of healthcare and his inability to have so far not delivered on a public option.People were unhappy with Obama's handling of healthcare but not the proposals.
And third, when the public option is polled as a stand alone, the support in every poll is overwhelming, from 57% and 58% in the Washington Post and Kaiser Family Foundation polls in January, to the 72% support in the CBS News poll.
