Hollywood sued over use of Rio's Christ statue
Agence France-Presse
February 25, 2010

Brazil's Catholic Church is suing Hollywood for using unauthorized images of Rio de Janeiro's famous giant Christ statue in its disaster movie blockbuster 2012, a lawyer involved in the case told AFP on Wednesday.

Rio's archdiocese is demanding unspecified damages and interest from Columbia Pictures for showing the iconic landmark being destroyed in a worldwide apocalypse in a film that came out last year, said the archdiocese's attorney, Claudine Dutra.

The archdiocese manages copyright issues related to the 40-metre-high statue, which overlooks Rio with its arms outstretched.

Under Brazilian law, copyright resides in the author of a work until his death, and then is passed on to his heirs or estate or successor entity for another 70 years.

The Christ the Redeemer statue was created by Paul Landowski, a French artist of Polish descent, on commission from the Rio archdiocese and erected in 1931. (more at link)

I can think of no more appropriate illustration than this one:

4. Considering the lows to which people keep sinking
I'm beginning to wish "2012" would come to pass.

Seriously, the movie didn't even do that well . . . although I enjoyed it. It is a theatre movie, all special effects, with a few interesting moral questions tossed in for spice.

6. In related news, the Catholic church is also seeing to copyright the term "pedophilia"
Edited on Thu Feb-25-10 01:25 PM by hughee99
but legal scholars are skeptical that this will be successful. Referring to the case where GOP tried to copyright "douchebag", several argued that just because the Republican party happens to be full of douchebags, it doesn't given them any special rights to copyright the word.

12. Those things were nearly universal in front of auto repair shops a few years back.
Now you can't find one to save your life. Odd.

18. Ironically, one of the 'landmarks' most jealously guarded by copyright lawyers is:
http://blogs.seattleweekly.com.nyud.net:8080/dailyweekly/hollywood.jpg

I've seen TV shows that say "we were going to have a picture of the big 'Hollywood' sign at this point, but the bastards have demanded a ridiculous fee, so here's a picture of a bunny with a pancke on its head instead" (or words to that effect).

I guess the established purveyor of dreams, glitz and wishful thinking is getting worried by the young upstart, and wants to make sure it pays. Gotta guard that throne against pretenders.

19. They should also sue the producers of that "Life After People" show
Since they've also shown the statue deteriorating and crashing down.

No. I don't watch it regularly. It was a hostage situation, okay? I was tied to a chair and couldn't change the channel, alright?
