Hummer at dead end after sale to Chinese collapses

NEW YORK – Hummer, the off-road vehicle that once symbolized America's love for hulking SUVs, has hit a dead end after its sale to a Chinese heavy equipment maker collapsed late Wednesday.

Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines Co. pulled out of the deal to buy the company from General Motors Co. Tengzhong failed to get clearance from Chinese regulators within the proposed timeframe for the sale, the Chinese manufacturer said Wednesday.

GM said it will continue to honor existing Hummer warranties.

and only drive them on special occasions when the sun is shining, hoping that 30 years from now, somebody wants them.

Hell, there's always Hollywood, and they used a DeLorean, why not a Hummer?

7. You might be driving a Hummer if...
...you don't measure fuel efficiency by miles per gallon, but rather gallons per mile.

(snip)

...the drive-thru lane at McDonalds is wider now than when you had entered.

(snip)

....your two-car garage has become a one-car garage.

Bigger is not always better.

Adios, hummer.

You know, there are two sides to every piece of news.

You are cheering the demise of the loss of yet another union assembly plant. FUCK THE WORKERS OF MISHAWAKA! YAAAY!!

But what the hell! You won't be annoyed by another large vehicle being built by people you don't know and purchased by people you don't know and don't like!

YAAAYY!

Just so we're clear here, I was never a big fan of the brand, but we are still talking about an American plant, employing American workers. Dancing on THAT grave is in rather poor taste.

12. I do feel sympathy for the workers...
But this brand has been operating at a loss, and they were never going to build them there regardless. What I'm happy about is the end of an absolutely horrific example of American consumer excess.

The only vehicle worse than a Hummer is a Hummer stretch limo.

Obviously, my best to all of the workers.

Which only was built from 2004 to 2008. 14,500 lb curb weight.

http://images.trucktrend.com/features/scenes/112_0604bts_15z+international_cxt+side_view.jpg

Oddly enough, the same gas mileage as the Hummer, though double the weight. Still a symbol of how extreme the excess had become.

Americans are involved in the manufacturing of weapons of mass destruction as well, would it be in poor taste to grave dance on the loss of those jobs as well? I embrace the demise of the Hummer as I will embrace the loss of those Defense industry jobs as well.

Insipid and poorly executed attempts at personal attacks aside, would you care to answer the question? Would you also celebrate the demise of other large vehicles at the expense of jobs? It looks like some DUers value symbolic stances over real-world workers.

40. People who were going to buy Hummers are going to buy other cars instead.
Moreover, the company will cease pouring money in a losing product and offer, I hope, better ones. Overall, in the long run, I don't really think this will cause job losses. If they happen, it will be from entirely different causes.

Kind of like with Toyota. They and they employees get a hit, other makers pick up the slack.

The only real loss here is -- yes, of a symbol. A right-wing symbol.

and either worked for or were dependent on someone working for Electric Boat or Northrop Grumman.

I suspect you would be singing a completely different tune.

Is the Hummer an example of American excess? Of course.
Should it have ever been built for public distribution in the first place? That's debatable.

What isn't debatable in my opinion, or rather what I think is in bad taste (or at least in bad form) is the dubious credibility of a thread titled as a "grave dancing thread" which at the end of the day, is little more than the attempted celebration of the demise of yet another American assembly line.

Americans are involved in the manufacturing of weapons of mass destruction as well, would it be in poor taste to grave dance on the loss of those jobs as well? I embrace the demise of the Hummer as I will embrace the loss of those Defense industry jobs as well.
Besides the value of proofreading, your post brings up a very valid point; How much of our tax dollars should we spend supplementing jobs which produce items of warfare? In my opinion, only as many as are necessary to secure the continuation of our nation. Having said that, the American General Plant (yes, that was who actually built the Hummer, NOT General Motors) built a vehicle that sold well for quite a long time. The fact that it would not last forever was written on the walls of that plant for years.

While I personally do not think we need another Aircraft Carrier or another line of strategic submarines, the people that live in those towns and work at those facilities depend on the public largess and our collective willingness to fund their products. As Americans, we continue to elect people to high office that perpetuate this system.

The Hummer brand was an offshoot of the above system.

Trust me on this one; If General Dynamics made an armored speedboat for the public market, Americans would buy it. Blaming the workers for that fact or cheering their demise when the market dries up is, in my opinion, terribly bad form.

Edited for sentence structure

28. I WISH I could supply a link and I'll try later but -
about 4 years ago, in a very typical early snowfall in the Anchorage area, and old Ford pickup (really old, like a 1970 model) hit a Hummer, or vice-versa, on a slippery corner.

Hummer, 0. Old Ford, 1. Hummer was totalled. Ford limped off to call the cops.

We laugh at them, conservatives and liberals alike, in our environment. I've seen a Prius outmaneuver a Jeep on some corners, and my little Jeep (a Liberty) has pulled a big dual-cab Ram out of a ditch with a trailer (and two snowmachines)attached.

It's not the rig. It's how you drive it. Idiots drive hummers.

Sure, Toyota and Nissan make some ugly vehicles (although that tissue box 1940's U.K. delivery van Honda makes is really the ugliest), but it is difficult to imagine anything that has ever been produced combining fucking ugly with overt environmental terrorism in quite the way that a Hummer does.

32. I can't really celebrate, but I am glad to see the
philosophical turnaround from the "old" GM from a few years back...Lutz and some of the other clowns were REALLY snarky about their beloved 'free market' when anyone dared question the logic of single-child soccer moms driving big-assed H2s to get groceries, or yuppie dad taking it on his 35-mile one-way daily commute...But hey -- Easy credit, gas was cheap, super-suburban homes were cheap, and it was *the* status symbol from rap stars and drug dealers, to patriotic politicians and the old boy country club set...GM literally couldn't make them fast enough to meet demand, so at the time they just laughed and told detractors to go hug some trees...Not even six years later a completely different tune...
