Senate jobs bill moves forward, 15-day unemployment benefit extension likely

I changed this out because I did find that they still want the 15-day unemployment extension - I at first had posted an article that said they eliminated this extension and it looks as if they are going to address this later:

AP file photoProgress was made yesterday in the Senate on the $15 billion hobs bill. The Senate pushed forward the $15 billion jobs bill Monday night. Five Republicans reached across the aisle to approve the procedural measure, which passed by a 62-30 vote. One Democrat did not support it. A final vote on the bill should take place in a few days.

The test vote makes it likely the Senate will approve the measure that critics say is too small and lacks provisions to extend unemployment benefits or the 65 percent federal subsidy for COBRA health insurance.

Yesterday, the Senate also began floating a proposal to extend the deadline to file for federal jobless benefits by 15 days.

The 15-day extension would give lawmakers more time to enact a longer fix, but it left them the object of scorn from consumer advocates, who want benefits extended through 2010
............

Let's hope they wake up soon!

2. Very bogus headline-beware of sources. I think the examiner
is r/w. Even the hill has a r/w bend, but here's their take:

Reid: Senate to take up tax extenders this week
By Jay Heflin - 02/22/10 06:12 PM ET

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Monday said his chamber would take up legislation later this week to resuscitate several tax breaks that expired last year.

The package will likely be raised as an amendment to an expansion of unemployment insurance.

“At the end of this week, we’re going to move into the tax extenders, and unemployment, COBRA, some things like that
,” Reid said. “I have explained this to the Republican leader.”

Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.), who had called on his chamber to pass legislation extending the tax breaks that expired last year, praised the move.

“My gosh, these expired last year,” he said. “We have to get them passed.”

6. Hey, good for you for
keeping informed; I try, too, and was definitely not criticizing you. But I'm always wary of anything that source writes. :hi:

4. Is that 15 days of money coming in or 15 extra days to file claims?

5. Here's more on it from CNN Money:
Senate eyes 15-day jobless benefit extension
By Tami Luhby, senior writerFebruary 22, 2010: 6:13 PM ET

http://money.cnn.com/2010/02/22/news/economy/15_day_unemployment_benefits_extension/index.htm

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- With 1.2 million people set to lose their unemployment checks starting next week, the Senate is looking to extend the deadline to file for federal jobless benefits by 15 days.

Lawmakers have yet to set a date to vote on the measure.

Without an extension beyond the Feb. 28 deadline, people receiving state jobless benefits won't be able to apply for additional federally paid unemployment insurance, and anyone already receiving those checks could be cut off. They also won't be able to sign up for the 65% federal subsidy for COBRA unemployment insurance.

Lawmakers were on track in mid-February to introduce legislation that would have extended the deadline for the two benefits to May 31, at a cost of $25 billion over 10 years. But Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., then decided to offer a slimmed-down job creation package that did not include the provision.

8. WTF?
"Anyone currently receiving those checks could be cut off." That's the first time I've heard that. I thought that whatever extension one was on by that date, they can continue to collect until that extension runs out. We just can't file for the next extension if we end before 2/28. (Also on unemployment, for a year now :( )

7. I am pretty sure it means 15 more days
to be able to file for the next extension, IF your current extension runs out by or before that day.
