Astounding ignorance: "Handicapped Children Are God's Punishment to Women"
Virginia Delegate Bob Marshall of Manassas has found a new explanation for why there are disabled children in the world -- apparently they are God's punishment to women for abortion.

On Thursday at a press conference to urge the state to end all funding to Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia, the Staunton News Leader quotes Marshall:

"The number of children who are born subsequent to a first abortion with handicaps has increased dramatically. Why? Because when you abort the first born of any, nature takes its vengeance on the subsequent children," said Marshall, a Republican.

"In the Old Testament, the first born of every being, animal and man, was dedicated to the Lord. There's a special punishment Christians would suggest."

2. If one is in politics as a career
then one should make no proclamations about "God's punishment" or intent, or will.

That one should quit the world of politics and become a cleric.

5. Trying to understand how these people think is how God punishes newspaper readers
This kind of thinking is like word scrabble.

God punishes women for abortions with handicapped children.       or...
Abortions are how women punish God for handicapped children.      or...
God is how handicapped children punish abortions for women.       or...
Womean are how abortions punish handicapped children for God.

I could go on. I won't.

7. How does he answer for Isaac and Jacob, both younger brothers?
In the mythology Christianity follows, often the younger brother, not the older, reigns supreme.

Ismael was displaced by Isaac.

Jacob was the younger, but he stole the birthright of Esau, his older twin.

When the Angel of Death was (allegedly) sent to Egypt, it was the first born who were killed.

13. Damn it I wish they would make up their freaking minds for the last 50 years
the religious brain dead claimed handi capped kids were caused because one or both parents offended god by breaking one of his rules so god, being all wise, decided the best way to punish the wrong doers was to make their kids suffer through life with disabilities. Which also showed you that christians were good god fearing folks because every child wasn't born with sever handi caps

22. So that means Sara Palin must have aborted her 1st child.
Boy, God was really slow on the uptake with her. She had 4 healthy normal children prior to her punishment. Seems very strange.

This guy is off his rocker. Besides the passage he is partially parroting applies to Israelis not Gentiles. The man does not know his theology. Jesus died for all our sins, once and for all. So, even Sara's sins have been forgiven and there is no need for God to punish her, if she's a true Christian.

27. Marshall has "apologized"
Edited on Tue Feb-23-10 10:21 AM by MountainLaurel
Virginia Del. Robert G. Marshall apologized Monday to people with disabilities for remarks suggesting that women who have abortions risk having later children with birth defects as a punishment from God.

snip

Marshall said his broader point on Thursday was that he had collected a substantial amount of published medical research suggesting that abortions raise the risk of miscarriage and birth defects in subsequent pregnancies and that those findings echoed the Bible's teaching that abortion is wrong.

"The point is, there are profound consequences to the act of abortion," Marshall said.

Late Monday, his office released a formal apology. Addressing the story that his office said had "conveyed the impression that I believe disabled children are a punishment for prior abortions," Marshall explained:

He should be heckled and challenged on camera. I think a couple of weeks of this will get the message across.
