Happy 75th Birthday to the Village Vanguard
FEBRUARY 23rd, 1935

So what happened on February 23rd, 1935?

Max Gordon opened the doors to the Village Vanguard!

And 75 years later, we're still in the same spot; the basement of 178 7th Avenue South.

The week of February 23rd - 28th, 2010 marks our 75th ANNIVERSARY!

And to honor the occasion, Joe Lovano lights up the bandstand with his group "Us Five" featuring James Weidman (piano), Esperanza Spalding (bass), Otis Brown III (drums), Francisco Mela (drums).

1. Joe Lovano is divine--I heard him play at the Vanguard a few years back
and also at Telluride--Cingrts, Village Vanguard--best basement club ever!

3. I heard him in Montreal, and will be at his session here in Chicago ...
with the same group (Esperanza Spaulding et al.) in March at the Jazz Showcase.

The Village Vanguard was the first place I went on the first day I arrived in New York to go to school when I was 18 years old. Happy Birthday, VV ... at least you're older than me.

4. I went twice
in the early 70s. Those were the days.

2. Isn't that van getting too old to need guarding?
