RICHMOND — State Delegate Bob Marshall of Manassas says disabled children are God's punishment to women who have aborted their first pregnancy.

He made that statement Thursday at a press conference to oppose state funding for Planned Parenthood.

"The number of children who are born subsequent to a first abortion with handicaps has increased dramatically. Why? Because when you abort the first born of any, nature takes its vengeance on the subsequent children," said Marshall, a Republican.

developmentally disabled children were the result of the mother having sex outside or before marriage. Even some doctors believed this and told this to mothers of such children. I worked in that field for a while, and I heard this from mothers as well as social workers. Some women suffered crippling guilt for years because of this evil "moralizing".

Bills that would define personhood as starting at the moment of conception, that would place all kinds of restrictions on abortion providers, that would impose restrictions on the provision of contraceptives, that would allow pharmacies to follow so-called "conscience" (namely "refusal") clauses, and so on. You get the idea.

As I mentioned in another thread, one of his more outrageous comments was that providing contraceptives would make women "chemical love canals" for frat house playboys, or something to that effect.

The outer Virginia suburbs of DC have grown immensely over the past decade. A lot of newcomers don't know his history and/or don't pay attention to state races. Marshall is also able to get some support from voters who might otherwise be disinclined to support him because of his work on certain environmental issues.
