Dutch government may fall due to Afghan mission
The Dutch Cabinet is in a marathon session on whether to extend the Netherlands' military mission in Afghanistan, and Dutch media are saying the coalition government is likely to collapse.
News reports say that after more than 11 hours, the three-party alliance remains deeply divided over whether to keep a trimmed-down military presence in Uruzgan province or to pull out when the mission expires in August.
Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende has tried to delay the decision. But Wouter Bos, the finance minister and leader of the Labor Party, has demanded a ruling on Friday.
The Dutch mission to the restive southern province began in August 2006. Since then 21 Dutch soldiers have been killed there.
