Marine Corps drops student after violent essay draws charges

By MEGAN REICHGOTT
Associated Press Writer

CHICAGO (AP) -- Allen Lee dreamed of joining the Marines his entire life, a dream that was on the verge of coming true after the suburban Chicago 18-year-old signed enlistment papers this month.

One violent, profanity-laced English essay later and Lee's future with the Marine Corps appears to be over.

Because of pending criminal charges stemming from his essay, Lee's recruiter told him Friday evening that the Marine Corps has discharged him from his contract, said Sgt. Luis R. Agostini, spokesman for the Marine Corps Recruiting Station Chicago.

"Basically he is no longer an applicant to become a Marine," Agostini said.

1. Sorry, son.
Your violent tendencies disqualify you from becoming a professional killer.
Kids, get out your pens and start your essays!

2. Not moral enough to become a man trained to kill on command?
I'm having a real Alice's Restaurant flashback here....

5. for those who don't know about Alice's Restaurant (where you can get just about
anything you want... excepting Alice)

I want to kill. I mean, I wanna, I
wanna kill. Kill. I wanna, I wanna see, I wanna see blood and gore and
guts and veins in my teeth. Eat dead burnt bodies. I mean kill, Kill,
KILL, KILL." And I started jumpin up and down yelling, "KILL, KILL," and
he started jumpin up and down with me and we was both jumping up and down
yelling, "KILL, KILL." And the sargent came over, pinned a medal on me,
sent me down the hall, said, "You're our boy."

I was just going to bring that up, No. 6

3. Alice's Restaurant Redux.
I wonder if a littering conviction would still keep someone out of Kaiser George's Cannonfodder Army?

4. He does seem to be a little goofy, but arrested for an English vignette?
And how does somebody get a 4.2 GPA? This story smells fishy.

7. Nope - they offer so much extra credit in schools now that
anyone with half a brain and willing to do the extra credit can get higher than a 4.0 now.

Boggles my mind, too, but it's absolutely true. I have co-workers who have children with 4.2 and 4.3 and 4.4 GPAs.

16. Yeah, it makes more sense to give more points for easier work.
:eyes:

Weighted GPAs are the only way to get around the otherwise perverse incentive that advanced classes would create.

8. Weighted grades
In some schools advanced classes give weighted grades where an A will get you 5 points, a B will get you four points and so on.

13. This is such PC nonsense on the part of the school, and unfortunately quite common
I saw a large numbers of the nerdy kids abused by school admins after Columbine. Teachers hand out BS assignments, a smart kid decides to yank his/her chain, and the cops and/or counselors get called in. When it makes the national press and makes them look quite foolish, they increase the charges. Real professional behavior from educrats. I've seen this at other schools, including the one I taught at. Make a teacher or admin look bad and the wrath of the machine desends on you.

While I generally despise lawsuits, this one merits it. If its properly worded the NEA insurance will decline to cover and the fools will have to back off or get seriously hurt financially. I would prefer the latter so as to serve as a lesson to others. The only government function with no true accountability is education and that has to stop.

15. I bet another branch of military would take him.
Thinking about the draft and while this may keep you out of the Marines, I bet some other branch would take you.
