Edited on Fri Apr-27-07 08:50 PM by in_cog_ni_to
I have to buy some more food for our little Isabelle and was doing a Google to find something SAFE and found Newman's Own ORGANIC Dog food! HIM, I trust. Here's the info if you're interested:

Newman's Own Organics pet foods are NOT part of the mass recall by Menu Foods or the extended recall. We DO NOT use wheat gluten or rice protein concentrate in any of our pet products. All our pet foods are made in the US and certified organic by Oregon Tilth, a USDA accredited certifying agency.

What's In It & What's Not?

What’s in?

Natural Chicken - Raised without growth hormones and antibiotics and fed only a 100% natural, all-vegetable diet, the chicken meat provides amino acids essential for muscles, hormones, enzymes, antibodies and structural and protective tissues.Natural Chicken Meal – Defined by Association American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) as being “ground or otherwise reduced in particle size”, meal serves as a concentrated source of amino acids that is low in ash (minerals), moisture and fat.

Chicken Fat – Highly palatable source of essential fatty acids.

Menhaden Fish Meal – Ocean-caught, deep water fish that provides amino acids, the building blocks of protein, and omega-3 essential fatty acids

Organic* Soy Meal – A concentrated source of low-fat, bio-available protein. There is no evidence to indicate that dogs or cats are allergic to soy or that it causes bloat or other digestive disturbances in animals.

Organic* Brown Rice –Grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, these whole grains supply complex carbohydrates for sustained energy and B vitamins and beneficial fiber to maintain a healthy digestive tract and promote normal stools. The healthful oils in rice bran contain important phytonutrients, including heart-healthy oryzanols.

Organic* Barley – Grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, these whole grains provide vitamins A, C, E, B1, B2, B6, biotin, complex carbohydrates, tocotrienols (a potent antioxidant) and beneficial fibers.

Organic* Peas – Grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, these legumes supply complex carbohydrates, vitamin A and c, iron and beneficial fiber to support digestive function….. pets like the taste of peas.

Organic* Flax Seed Meal - A rich source of linoleic and omega-3 fatty acids as well as essential amino acids. Flax is a good source of magnesium, phosphorous and copper, and a very good source of dietary fiber, thiamin and manganese. It also contains vitamins including B group and E. Flax is a recommended source for lignans, an important phytonutrient with powerful antioxidant properties.

Organic* Oats - Grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, these whole grains supply B-complex vitamins, fiber and complex carbohydrates to help maintain healthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

Organic* Carrots - Provide vitamins A and C, powerful antioxidants that neutralize free radicals and support healthy vision, and the important phytonutrient beta-carotene.

Organic* Sorghum – A good source of dietary fiber, vitamin C, calcium and other important micronutrients, including iron. (Sorghum is an important cereal crop whereas molasses is made from sugar beet or cane).

Fresh Parsley – Serves as an intestinal calmative and aids in nutrient absorption and elimination of gastric odors leading to “doggie breath”. Good source of vitamins C and A, iron and calcium.

Kelp - A good source of essential vitamins and minerals (including iodine).

Sea Salt – A natural flavor enhancer, this unrefined salt contains essential trace minerals.

Probiotics – Replenishes naturally occurring beneficial bacteria (“friendly bacteria”) to improve the nutritional status of the intestinal tract and support immune health.

Taurine – an essential amino acid for cats that supports cardiovascular and neurological function. Now thought to be important in maintaining heart function in certain breeds of dogs, including Cocker spaniels and Golden retrievers.

*Organically certified by USDA-National Organics Program.

What’s not?

NO Poultry by-products - Ground, rendered, cleaned slaughtered poultry carcass parts such as necks, feet, lips, lymph nodes, undeveloped eggs and intestines (and a small amount of feathers). The quality is very inconsistent between batches. Note: By product meals are often derived from 4-D meat sources - defined as food animals that have been rejected for human consumption because they were presented to the meat packing plant as “Dead, Dying, Disabled or Diseased”.

NO Chemical fertilizers - Chemical fertilizers have been incriminated in serious health problems in animals and are not allowed in organic-certified products.

NO Antibiotics or steroids - Long-term daily administration may result in a compromised immune system, muscle wasting, and destruction of the friendly bacteria living in the intestines that aid the digestion of food and assimilation of nutrients.

NO Chemical additives or artificial preservatives - Chemical antioxidants, such as ethoxyquin, BHT or BHA, that were designed to extend the shelf life and reduce fat spoilage (rancidity) of pet foods may cause allergic reactions and affect liver and kidney functions.

NO Wheat or corn - Wheat and corn may cause allergies in some dogs and cats.

NO Artificial flavors – Flavor enhancers are produced by the enzymatic liquefaction or hydrolysis of animal tissue. Those made with phosphoric acid are particularly appealing to cats because they produce a "tingling" sensation on the tongue.

NO Artificial Colors and Dyes – Coloring agents provide an artificial "rich and meaty" look to modify the appearance of highly processed foods and make them more appealing to pet owners.

Charity

NEWMAN’S OWN® ORGANICS GOES TO THE DOGS…AND CATS
Paul Newman Pledges $100,000 to Animal Organizations at Launch of Organic Pet Food Line

APTOS, Calif…Newman’s Own Organics announces the introduction of its new line of premium pet foods for dogs and cats that will benefit animals’ nutritional health as well as animal related causes.

All of the foods contain certified organic ingredients, including Bell & Evans® Chicken, and organic vegetables and grains. The products do not contain antibiotics, hormones, chemical ingredients or artificial preservatives, colors, or additives. The pet food, like all of Newman’s Own Organics’ products, has been certified by Oregon Tilth. Paul and Nell Newman have chosen to donate all of the charity money generated by the sale of the pet food to organizations that support animals’ well-being.

“Pets have always been a part of our family life,” says Nell Newman, cofounder and president of the organic company. “With the rise in the number of cat and dog problems directly related to poor nutrition, we want to offer pets the same high quality food we buy for ourselves. We’re excited that we have come up with an organic formulation that is nutritious and great tasting for our four-footed friends, while also helping those not so fortunate. This project has been ‘on the table’ for a long time; now, it’s in the bowl where it belongs.”

Paul Newman gives away all his after-tax profits from the royalties from Newman’s Own and Newman’s Own Organics to educational and charitable organizations. The specialty pet retailers participating in the launch of the new line of organic pet food will have the opportunity to help select the ten national animal and animal related organizations receiving the initial $100,000. “We look forward to focusing our donations on animal shelters and animal related services", says Peter Meehan, cofounder and CEO of Newman’s Own Organics.

Newman’s Own Organics pet food will be sold initially in independent specialty pet stores nationwide. The dry dog food is available in two life stage formulas: Chicken & Rice Adult Formula Dog Food and Chicken & Rice Formula Senior Dog Food in 5 lb., 12.5 lb., and 25 lb. bags. Canned dog food is available in Chicken & Brown Rice Formula and Chicken Formula in 12.7 oz cans. The dry cat food formulations are: Chicken & Rice Formula Cat & Kitten Food and Chicken & Rice Formula Senior Cat Food, which come in 3 lb. and 6.5 lb. bags. Canned food is available in three varieties: Chicken & Brown Rice Formula, Chicken & Salmon Formula, and Turkey Formula in 5.5 oz cans.

7. I wish I worked for Newman's Own company! I LOVE their products and especially their charity work.
This is NOT advertising a product! MANY DUers have pets and I thought they'd be interested in what Newman's has to offer. That's all.

And Why the fuck do you call it DISGUSTING advertising? I'm just trying to help pets. Do you hate dogs and cats?

18. What an honor, wouldn't you just love to work for Newman's Own?
What a pleasure it would be to come home every night knowing you worked for someone who donated all the profits from the products under his label to charity....instead of some greedy CEO who cared less about where the ingredients in his products came from, just as long as that make him rich.

Back to your assertion....

The OP does read like an advertisement, but if you had been following the many threads on the recall of the the tainted dog foods and how many of the brands are premiere brands, claiming exclusive ingredients no by-products and not part of the the Menu or diamond dog food recall......only to find out a day or week later they are pulling certain canned or dry food off the shelf because it is making animals sick. How many people switched to those brands to find their animals getting sick from the new foods.

This has been going on for weeks and Incognito (see her beautiful dog Isabelle) have contributed to the comments but never to pitch any brand. It is only for the benefit of those, who like myself, have been sick of being used by these corporations that claim their food is safe, yet haven't tested their ingredients nor looked into the claims made by people calling their hotlines to report their best (4 legged) friends are getting sick and some are dying. I for one, appreciate the information she provided, because I am at a loss for which food to turn to having fed my Buddy Natural Balance all his life, and in 2007 he started getting sick with huge vet bills, and the vets are at a loss to figure out exactly what is causing it. The food is the same brand but purchased at a Petco and not a pet store. I am not claiming this is what is making him sick, but the dry food is definately a different color from tan to brown and has dry white particles on it, like it is salted. In the 4 years I have fed him the same NB, it never looked like that.

Thanks again Incognito. Together we will protect the ones who protect us everyday.

BTW, monktoman, Welcome to DU!

19. erm just to be clear it doesn't say ALL the profits
"after-tax profits from the royalties"

The donations are comendable and the product sounds good, just know that it isn't 100% altruism. And no, I don't think there is anything wrong with profit. Just concerned with accuracy.

21. I hate playing stupid mind games
http://www.newmansown.com/faqs.cfm

Paul Newman and the Newman’s Own Foundation donate all profits and royalties after taxes for educational and charitable purposes.

Q. To which charities does Newman's Own give the profits?

Actually, Newman's Own, Inc. makes no gift to charity, but Paul Newman, who receives all the profits and royalties from Newman's Own, Inc., distributes all of that personally to the charities of his choice. Since the inception of the company, it is our understanding that the total amount of those gifts to charity has been approximately $200 million.

Is that accurate enough for you?

What is your point?

22. Mind games?
I just quoted from the original post "Paul Newman gives away all his after-tax profits from the royalties from Newman’s Own and Newman’s Own Organics to educational and charitable organizations."

By the way Newman's Own Organics is a separate company from Newman's Own.

2. They say that the products are made in America,
but do they purchase any ingredients outside of the United States??? We only feed Merrick Foods and a raw diet combination. Merrick is the only company that we have found so far that uses USDA ingredients. This whole recall stuff is just crazy and it seems like the media and the FDA are covering it up big time. I know it is bigger than we think but they just do not want to create panic.
