The Course of Empire, a series of paintings by Thomas Cole.
I post this periodically. It seems appropriate for these times.

The Savage State

The Pastoral State

Consummation

Destruction

Desolation

2. So, are we...
...fighting desperately to cling tightly to the Consumation state or are have we drifted irretrievably towards Destruction?

Sorry but there's no rolling back to the pastoral state.

Any way, he's a helluvan artist.

3. I'm dying to go to Cole's home - Cedar Grove, on the west side of the Hudson. I've been to Frederic
Edwin Church's place across the river. Cole was Church's mentor. So, Church's work is like Cole's without being messed up on religion.

5. Great thread. Cole's Voyage of Life series is at the National Gallery and Munson Williams
Proctor Museum in Utica, NY.

Folks would pay money to sit and look at Cole's paintings as we do movies.

7. Thomas Cole
I run the Thomas Cole Historic Site, and you should definitely visit in May when we open! Cole is considered the first to express views about preservation of beautiful American landscapes, and the landscapes near his home are spectacular. Check out the website to learn more: www.thomascole.org.
