Oranges prompt police department evacuation

By Chris Paschenko

Published February 16, 2010
DICKINSON — Police were searching Monday for the man who dropped off a suspicious package — which turned out to have contained oranges — that led to the evacuation of the department’s headquarters, authorities said.

Shortly before 11 a.m. a man was standing inside the Dickinson Police Department when he saw another man enter the lobby and leave a cardboard box wrapped in duct tape with writing on it, Police Chief Ron Morales said.

“They guy standing there tells the dispatcher that some guy just dropped off the box and you may want to take a look at it,” Morales said.

Officials evacuated the building and summoned an FBI bomb squad to investigate, Morales said.

About noon, the box ultimately was found to contain oranges, and no one at the station had ordered fruit, Morales said.

Police were working to identify the man and the truck that he left in, Morales said.

2. You're laughing, but
he'll probably be charged with a felony. Once caught, his life will most certainly be ruined, and if he has any family depending on his income, they will be thrust headfirst into poverty. If he has children, they will be without a father; if he is married, it will likely end in divorce. He will likely not be eligible for any sort of financial aid for continuing education, he won't ever be eligible for hire (even in fast food), he won't be eligible for public assistance, and he'll likely be jailed again and again for failure to pay his fines and court costs.

It's a vicious, unending Moebius strip, and I've seen this happen to people I know too many times to count for things far, far more petty than this. The act and the overreaction may be amusing, but the consequences certainly aren't.

Sorry to harsh your buzz, but for this poor sot, it's something that will very likely end forever his chances of being a productive member of society.
