GREENSBORO — The opening of the International Civil Rights Center & Museum comes at a time when North Carolina officials plan to place major emphasis on the state’s black heritage, including the possibility of a statewide trail that could link as many as 100 African American related sites.
“That’s the ultimate goal,” said Russ Haddad, an official with the N.C. Division of Tourism, Film and Sports Development. “This is really one of the pieces of North Carolina history that has been largely ignored for a variety of reasons. Now is the time and opportunity to bring it out in the open.”
Officials in the departments of Commerce and Cultural Resources plan to meet this week to talk about how to organize and develop such a trail.
“We are going to take small steps,” Haddad said, adding that no timeline has been established for the project. “We may do it regionally.”
