Chemicals That Make You Fat
February 11, 2010 6:24 AM

Stephen Perrine, author of "The New American Diet," spoke to Harry Smith about certain chemicals found in common foods called "obesogens" and how they play a role in the American obesity crisis.

http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=6197433n&tag=cbsnewsSectionContent.1

And they wonder why the poor are obese.

1. synopsis: pesticides on permeable skin produce, growth hormone laden beef, BPA leached from plastic
packaging.

All mimic estrogen by slowing or diminishing metabolism and encouraging weight gain.

5. One thing they didn't mention; increased estrogen or any hormonal imbalance
can cause hypothyroid disease and adrenal fatigue-both of which effect metabolism and are linked to depression, congestive heart failure, low or high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis, insomnia, anxiety, infertility, "brain fog" and a whole host of other illnesses and disorders. Bad for us, great for Big Pharma.

10. People have suffered from hypothyroidism for many centuries.
But it's more common now, because autoimmune diseases are more common now, due to all the toxic chemicals we ingest that they don't tell us about.

40. It's even far more common than most people realize
"fibromyalgia" (which I was diagnosed with 30 years ago) and "chronic fatigue syndrome" are both the symptoms of either untreated hypothyroid or adrenal fatigue. Pre 1970, if a person came into a doctor complaining of chronic exhaustion, muscle and joint pain, depression, brain fog, memory problems, etc. the doctor would put the patient on natural dessicated thyroid or HC and watch to see if the symptoms improved. Now the doctors order a pituitary gland test which big pharma INSISTS is 100% correct in detecting hypothyroid, and they don't even bother with the 24 hour cortisol test that could detect adrenal fatigue or Addison's disease: http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/ . The doctors may mean well; it's big pharma that's convinced them that their tests are infallible. So more and more people get sick, many even die from it, others waste decades of their lives feeling horrible, fighting weight gain and depression and never enjoying much at all...all because of a global sham devised to give Big pharma millions of new patients for "chronic illnesses" that are nothing more than symptoms from a very treatable disease. And you won't hear the MSM talking much about it. It's too profitable to keep us all hooked on their drugs, products, and news programs touting the newest diets, pain or depression treatments.

2. Obese-ogens?
I'm sorry, this comes across like an Onion news video...they don't really even explain what "Obesogens" are, they are apparently just chemicals in food which act like estrogen and lower testosterone levels, and you can 'avoid' them by eating foods with non-permeable skin, organic foods, grass-fed cattle and tuna in bags rather than plastic lined tins.

OK.

got it!

12. All those hormones that are fed to meat animals to make them meatier...
The person who eats the meat also ingests the hormones that cause weight gain. It's not that difficult to see the "obesogen" connection with animal products.

As for the other "obesogens", I agree that while some of the additives and chemicals seem harmful or unhealthy, it's harder to see why they would cause weight gain. Cancer and heart disease, sure. But weight gain? Maybe.

14. So do I. So do most people on the planet. The point is that
people can eat skewed amounts of these quantities and that, along with a sedentary lifestyle, cause obesity. I eat fats and carbs, but I eat whole grain pasta with clam sauce, olive oil, garlic and flat leaf parsley. It is probably much fewer in calories or fat grams than a large bag of Doritos. Alongside the salad I serve with it (with olive oil and wine vinegar dressing) calorie for calorie it is a healthful and delicious dinner.

38. Oh, I'm so sorry! Have you ever tried pasta with clam sauce?
I guess if you are not familiar with the food you would be repelled. I was that way with raw oysters. Now they are a supreme delicacy to me; I prefer the briny ones, with a dollop of lemon juice, the Prince Edward Island ones excelling.

Sigh, this is why I love to travel to Italy and Spain whenever I get the chance...the respect they have for seafood, fresh everything and they insist on it, washed down with their lovely wines...mmm, I'm getting hungry and it's only 9 am!

41. But you're not a member of the Canary Club
Every body is not identical. What works for you might level someone else. If I even eat a handful of Doritos I get headaches, body aches, digestive problems, and feel so tired that I'll end up sleeping for 16 hours straight. My system can't handle the chemicals and preservatives. Yours can. It's not a one size fits all world.

19. Of course that's part of it. Even a really big part. But let's try to maximize
the effect that exercise and healthy eating habits will have. No harm in arming ourselves with the best information, right?

That is SO great that you've done so well, and in such a short amount of time! I'm very proud to say that I've lost a considerable amount of weight myself and all I do is walk. I started at less than 30 minutes and within a couple of months built up to at least an hour a day and if I can do it outside I walk up to 2 hours if I have the time, like on weekends.

Oddly, it's more difficult now to watch my intake since my appetite has increased so much with the exercise. It means that I absolutely cannot have any unhealthy food in the house. There are times I'm so hungry that I'd probably grab the first thing in the pantry. That wouldn't be good if the first thing happened to be peanut butter and jelly or something. :) Right now Mineola tangelos are my favorite snack. Easy to peel so they're quick and they're good for you.

20. Congrats on your weight loss! That's really strong results!
Hope you reach your goal whatever that may be.

I've lost 15 lbs. of muscle mass over the past two months due to being unable to work out because of several different events. I HOPE that my sinus infection is just about gone (it has lingered for three weeks and completely sapped my energy).

I should be able to start lifting weights again soon and I'll re-start consuming more calories again once the workouts resume. It's a battle to gain weight, but one that I succeed with when consistently eating right and lifting weights. Consistency is critical to success.

Keep it up!

:)

building muscle mass means you burn more calories all the time, not just when you are exercising.

and you don't understand the science, so enough with the predictable smugness. there's little difference between the "but I can eat ANYTHING and don't gain weight" crowd, the "but I lost weight the traditional way, and I'm never sick"! crowd and the "but it's snowing so that disproves global warming" gits. If your testosterone levels suddenly dropped or your thyroid function slowed down you could eat 800 calories a day and not drop a pound. Google it.

for much less than you can at the regular stores. We got some on Sunday and tried it yesterday. It was amazingly good. And let me tell you, I am super picky about ground beef.
