2. Doesn't matter.
You need signatures to enter the primary. At this point no one has enough signatures to enter a primary. The Party can still slate a candidate, and will, for the general election.

23. has he at any time even mentioned getting into politics?
I love his music, and he has done Farm Aid and other things -- but the political arena? He could do more for Indiana by agitating all those farmers to get out their pitchforks and torches and go visit the *good old boys* running both parties in the State.

There are a lot of detractors here who simply cannot explain why we shouldn't ask him to run. They are naysayers full of negativity.

37. A few things...
1) He's more liberal than the other top choices.

2) In a year where people are fed up with the Washington establishment, a complete outsider might be the best bet.

3) He has the name recognition needed to jump in at a moment's notice.

Being an adequate Senator isn't something one can really screw up. You just have to show up and vote the right way. I'm sure he probably won't be a great Senator right away, but very few are when they first get there. Some, including those who have a lot of prior political experience, never become good Senators.

11. Done. Also, there is something about the Bayh development already on
Mellencamp's Wikipedia page:

...snip...

On February 15, 2009, United States Senator Evan Bayh officially ended his re-election campaign, with no other major candidate left in the race, leading to speculation as to whether Mellencamp would decide to run for the seat, due to his heavilly opinionated stance on many different issues. He has so far refused to comment as to whether he would consider running, or not.

20. He has certainly expressed a great deal of interest in social justice issues.
As someone who has worked on campaigns, including Alan Grayson's campaign here in Florida, let me say that money, popularity and name recognition are huge advantages in winning campaigns and Mellencamp, like Franken has all three. It is HARDLY "fantasy" politics - consider that plenty of people trade on previous celebrity to get elected to office - John Glenn, Ronald Reagan, Arnold Schwartzenegger, Jesse Ventura, Al Franken, Sonny Bono, Bill Bradley, Fred Grandy, Ben Jones, and Clint Eastwood all come immediately to mind as successful examples.

NO he wasn't - it's NOT "fantasy" politics - plenty of celebrities have run for office and won.

53. one more time: THEY HAVE TO WANT TO RUN.
Clearly Grayson wanted to. So did Franken. It's a really grueling thing to do and it entails giving up a lot- your time and any privacy. If he's into it, great; let's hear him out. But to date there is not one single hint that he is interested.

And that's why it's fantasy politics.

28. That's true, I guess. But sometimes someone is called to serve. He shares
our values and supports our policies. He has instant name recognition and is popular in his state. He would illicit instant financial support. And, he could conceivably win.
