How fast is the world changing?
In 1995, soon after the government opened the telecom sector to private companies there were only 7,000 mobile phones in New Delhi, and less than 10 percent of the population had landlines.

Today, about 500 million of India's nearly 1.2 billion people have mobile phones.

3. The same thing happened in China.
It was too expensive to run telephone wires. The utility poles were already a mess, the proverbial rat's nest.

4. Vendors shipped 325 million mobile phones in 4Q2009
That is more phones than there are people in the United States in a single quarter.

In other words, the production rate is well over a billion handsets per year. A significant fraction of the world's 7 billion people have mobile phones.
