I, who once wouldn't let one night go by without watching KO and Rachel, have not seen their programs for over a week. I can't bring myself to watch. I've been wondering about how many American voters the (now) 41 obstructionists in the Senate represent, so I did a little research and plugged it into excel.

The 41 GOP Senators (this includes Scott Brown) represent 37.0% of the population, the 57 Democratic Senators represent 62.3% of the population. Prior to Brown it was 63.4% to 35.9%. The numbers don't add to 100 because I excluded LIEberman and Sanders. Counting LIEberman as a "R" and Sanders as a "D" this changes to 62.4% to 37.6%.

Throw in Nelson, Lincoln, Pryor, and Bayh and it changes to 39.9% for Republicans + Blue Dogs moderate Republicans, 60.1% Democrats.

So, the representatives of 36-40% of the population have stopped the house and the Senate representatives of a 60% majority of Americans from getting the people's work done.

(Methodology: I multiplied the number of GOP/DEM Senators by the state population divided in half, then summed. To estimate the contribution of Blue Dogs moderate Republicans I counted them as, you guessed it, Republicans. Senate membership is from senate.gov, 2009 population estimate is from Wikipedia.
