Greensboro eyes Google's ultra-high speed system
Greensboro officials want this city to be first in line to be a part of Google’s bold experiment to build an ultra high-speed Internet system in the United States.

This week, city staff and elected officials will meet to talk about the best way to ask Google for the chance to be selected for its Google Fiber for Community program. Under the program, Google says it will deliver Internet speeds up to 100 times faster than available now.

It wants to make the test system available to a minimum of 50,000 people and up to 500,000 people, the company said last week.

City Council Member Danny Thompson said today that he will meet with city staff members to plan their strategy on Wednesday morning.

“This could be transformative,” for Greensboro, said Thompson.
