Schumer Backs Master List Of Recalled Products

Sen. Charles Schumer plans to introduce legislation that would create a master list of products that have been recalled so that the information will be readily available to consumers.

At a news conference Sunday, Schumer said his bill would create an easily searchable Web site for recalled products.

Schumer's bill would also require merchants to notify customers if an item is subject to recall.

The New York Democrat said that under current law, a seller is not obligated to tell a buyer if a product is under recall.

There are always a lot of secret defects that auto manufacturers don't disclose but, instead, repair for free only when someone comes into the dealer and insists.

Example: A friend's Volvo's engine (120K miles) seized well outside of published warranty. When she took it into the dealer, they said the engine would have to be replaced to the tune of $6,000. Only after pressing them did they admit that these engines had a "known problem." They agreed to replace the engine for free.
