Teen Fends Off Mountain Lion With Sword
Pit Bull Suffers Minor Injuries In Fairfield Mauling
POSTED: 3:17 pm PST February 10, 2010
UPDATED: 5:14 pm PST February 10, 2010

FAIRFIELD, Calif. --
A Fairfield woman said her son used a ninja sword to fend off a mountain lion after it attacked their dog Wednesday afternoon.

Marquel Dawson, 19, was playing with the pit bull in a nature area near Fairview Place at about 1:30 p.m. when the mountain lion attacked, Robin Thomas-Willis said.

Dawson ran back home and got the sword out of their garage, then ran back.

Although the dog had the upper hand at first, Thomas-Willis said the mountain lion was winning by the time the boy returned with the sword.

1. Yet another example of "wonderful reporting" we have today...
They state the dog is ok, but don't say anything about the mountain lion. Did he kill it? What happened.

Geez... :eyes:

7. WTF is that about?
They just leave it blank right when it gets to the most important part of the story. Real great journalism these days :eyes:

21. The mountain lion was "fended off." It's right there.
If the kid came at him with the sword, he was not about to stay and submit to a physical.

Least that's my guess.

24. THAT is what satisfies you for reporting?
Here's the questions to be answered: Did the child strike the lion with the sword? Was the lion injured? Was Dept. of Fish & Wildlife called? What is Fish & Wildlife planning to do?

It horrifies me that you would think there was adequate reporting in this piece. I guess we get the press we demand (and deserve)...

27. The lion is probably dead or about to die, if the forestry service decides to put it down.
Even in the hands of an amateur, one swipe with a katana blade can inflict serious physical damage, especially on something not wearing body armor. It is ultimately a weapon, after all.

28. Perhaps... but we don't even know if he actually hit the lion...
Could they not have asked the question?

6. It also looks like a "walll hanger." It is a good thing that the katana

didn't come apart on him when he defended his dog.

18. I've heard the word, katana -
- and I know it's a traditional Japanese sword. But what is a ninjatou? I've never heard of that. Is it one of those shorter swords that come with the sword sets I often see hawked on late night tv?

The shorter version of the katana. The ninjatou is a straight sword.

13. well, what happened to the kid????!!!??
All it says is he ran after the lion with the sword, and now the dog is ok. So did the lion eat him, instead?

What a sloppy story.

14. Why didn't they call the dog a German Shepherd mix?
Oh yeah, that's right. The media loves the draw that the term "pit bull" brings.

I rest my case about the media's shit reporting on the breed.

Glad the kid and the dog are okay. Hope the mountain lion is too.

But it's a crime to brandish it, and much like handguns it must be unloaded. :p

25. Update on this
The kid hit the mountain lion with the sword, and the mountain lion immediately scurried into the brush and fled. The dog is apparently the young man's.

It was the lead story on the local news here in S.F.

The dog is quite a barker.

The lesson here is not to leave your sword at home when walking the dog.

30. Not a mountain lion
http://www.kcra.com/news/22534870/detail.html

The dog was attacked by a raccoon, not a mountain lion. Knew something was fishy with the mountain lion story last night when it was reported as it did not add up with how mountain lions attack. Also, given that the family called the media before they called Fish and Game, I think they were more interested in their 15 minutes of fame.

He would have killed the racoon with precision traps laced with peanut butter and beef jerky, and then eaten it over a period of 3 days.
