I think you are right about how Shrub is drawn, I have seen it before and especially in the last year, as his poll numbers dwindle, the way he is drawn gets smaller and more distorted.
Toons, I think , are one of the last bastions of progressive thought in the media. I don't have a clue as to how many of these get out in print, but I am constantly amazed at the creativity and productivity of the Toon Artists. I usually start off by thinking, "I'll probably only see a few interesting ones, maybe I will wait a few days and save them up" but nearly always I get sucked in and find dozens of worthy ones. Every Day! RJ Matson alone I think does more than a toon a day.
Love Rad Fringe and Swampy. I wish I had a fraction of their artistic talent, it is easy to think of an idea once in a while, but oh so much harder to do it on a regular basis, let alone visualize it in a way that makes the idea come to life.
It is also interesting to see what resonates and what doesn't. For example, there were very few toons on the subject of Edwards' house, but tons, and several from normally left leaning Artists, on his hair. Go figure. Same with the Supreme court decision on Partial Birth abortions. And with Senator Reid's comments, there are some really nasty ones, always on the theme of "waving a white flag". I don't post those kinds of toons unless I am feeling in a cantankerous mood, and then I do so in a thread called "the Anti-Toons". But probably best for all's blood pressure that I don't do so.
The issues that have resonated the strongest lately:
Walter Reed (almost all Artists in agreement, even the RW ones)
Surge
Gonzalez (again, almost all in agreement)
Virginia Tech Massacre (but split between RW and left Artists as to whom is to blame and what to do about it, sort of like here at DU).
I did mention productivity? Here's 3 more:
