Mr. Insipid Smerconish on MSNBC:
Shame if you missed this...it was a great moment of insight into this 'character'. As we know, the only thing which eclipses his on-air love of Farrah Fawcett posters is his love for The Three Stooges as a metphor, but I digress...) (N.B.: I love the Stooges as well, but don't routinely quote them to make a point...or the Marx Brothers either.)

He was interviewing a gentleman whose daughter was sent hom from her prom b/c a teacher claimed that she and some others were dressed inappropriately. He stated that when he first saw the story he was really pleased that a school was cracking down on lewd and lascivious dresses, but when he saw the pictures, he realized that there just wasn't enough bare skin for charges like this to be levelled at these kids. (He did mention that one of the young ladies was quite pregnant and asked the father of the other kid if that was an issue. He replied that it was not, and in doing so, took some of the wind out of Smirk's sails...but I digress again!) So now, Mikey's mad at the PC nature of the accusation.

Let me get this straight: if you can't get legs on a story b/c there isn't enough cleavage shown, and Lord knows Mikey's poster of Farrah on the ceiling wasn't provocative at all, you can get it from the teacher's perceived PC. In other words, you can play the story any way you like it to your advantage.

What we have here is a man who discusses on multiple occasions the fact that he was 'infatuated' (use your imagination...if you dare!) with a 70's pin-up icon but is willing to go out and criticize women for their dress and deportment. Wow is he repressed.

What bothers me most is that he's going to get a national voice from someone somehow somewhere.

1. Women are merely objects to him...
...whether for masturbatory fantasies or abuse. I tried to watch his show earlier in the week. He was talking to a woman in the studio who had a microphone in front of her and was apparently supposed to contribute to the show in some way. She is there every morning. He never introduces her or even mentions her name.

2. I have to tell you...
I'm a Philly native and enjoy living here. I've been around the country a bit, living, lecturing, and travelling, and Philly is OK. It's not New York, it's not SF, it's not picturesque like the open spaces...it's just Philly. Provincial, very inbred, small in its own way. smaller if you know numbers of people as I do by virtue of my work. Not bad, not great...medium energy level, some very nice people, some egotists..but other than THE RECORD NUMBER OF STREET KILLINGS WE HAVE HERE, AND THE DRUG WAR SILENTLY GOING ON IN THE WYNNEFIELD AREA, AND THE LACK OF POLICE PATROLS, AND THE ONGOING INSTITUTIONAL FRAUD, and a few other things not all bad.

This guy represents all that's wrong with this town: he's a metropolitan hick. He always refers to the town, but he never mentions the real strong points: Curtis Institute of Music, the Historic - and I'm referring to the REAL history, not the High School textbook variety - nature of what occurred when this was the first capital of the US, and a few other world-class institutions we have here. No, it's always the Phillies, the Cops, Frank Rizzo, some schlemiel with whom he went to school, the old 'neighborhood', etc.

A real small town putz...these guys are a 'royal pain in the ass'.
